How We Met: We were set up on a blind date by my former ice hockey coach and his current co-coach. I was pretty hesitant about being set up on a blind date but thought, “why not?” We later realized we had met a year ago at a Washington Capitals practice through a mutual friend.
Our first date was at a hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant (which I still tease him about to this day) which was followed by mini-golf (in which he did not let me win) and ended with a private skate at the Navy ice rink after hours — which ultimately saved the date. We were at the rink until nearly 4 a.m. just talking. And the rest, as they say, is history. We have been together now for nearly 3 years.
how they asked: One morning, Cory picked me up to go to brunch. After a delicious meal, he said he needed to go to the ice rink (where we ended our first date, where we both grew up playing ice hockey and both currently coach teams at). When I asked why, he said he needed to pick up his jacket from the night before because he forgot it after he finished coaching a game.
I reminded him that I remembered seeing him grab the jacket and that it wasn’t at the rink. Frustrated, he informed me we were going to the rink. Once we got there, he took me to the coaches bench next to the ice and told me he had a present for me. I open a bag and find a sweatshirt from a recent trip he had been on. Then, I see a pin from the police department he works at.
Confused, I look over at him and see he’s down on one knee. Then, I see his friend on the ice, snapping pictures. I don’t remember exactly what he said, but I remember saying “oh my god, oh my god, oh my god” and him using my full name and telling me how much he loves me and how he will always take care of me. Then, my fiancé opened the box to reveal the most breathtaking ring I have ever seen. (I was obviously too into the moment to realize my phone was in my pocket…)
