How We Met
Kevin and I met through a mutual friend last summer. Kevin, who lives in Athens, Georgia, was in town (I live on St. Simons Island, Georgia) visiting a good friend of ours. A large group of us all met up for dinner one evening, and that’s where we were introduced. I love how we met because it wasn’t a set up – it just happened! I remember the exact moment I saw Kevin for the first time. I was instantly drawn to him and could tell immediately that he was someone very special. We now joke that we should name our firstborn child after our friend who introduced us!
How they asked
Kevin proposed in the backyard at my grandparents’ house on Sea Island. It was just the two of us – no hidden photographers, no surprise engagement party waiting for us inside, no elaborately decorated setup – it was so intimate, so personal, and absolutely perfect. Kevin sent a dozen roses to my office earlier that day, so I was a tiny bit suspicious, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up! He picked me up for dinner later that evening, and mentioned he wanted to go watch the sunset at my grandparents’ house before our reservations.
We walked out to the edge of the yard where the marsh begins, and he got down on one knee! We spent the rest of the weekend at the house, just us together, soaking in the engagement, spending quality time together, and sharing the news with our friends and family. My grandparents’ house is incredibly sentimental not only to me, but to our relationship, too. This is where Kevin and I kissed for the first time, it’s where we spent our first Christmas together, and it’s where we’ve relaxed and made hundreds of memories together. It’s the house that built us.
Both of my grandparents passed away a few years ago, but my family has kept the house for everyone to enjoy. My grandparents’ ashes are spread in the backyard, and it’s where I feel closest to them. (Goodness, I’m getting emotional just typing this!) Although Kevin never had the opportunity to meet my grandparents, he knew how special this spot is to me and to my family. I had always dreamed of having my wedding in the backyard, but my family decided to put the house on the market this year. Kevin wanted to honor my dream as best he could by proposing in the backyard. I can’t put into words how special it was to feel my grandparents’ presence surrounding us in that moment in the backyard.
