How We Met

I moved to New York single and ready to take my career to the next level. I didn’t think I would find my soulmate nearly a month after landing at Laguardia. We met on a dating app called Bumble, where the woman has to reach out to the man first. He was tall, dark and handsome and I wanted to send a note right away however I saw a little sentence in his profile. “I’m 6’4 because it matters,” he wrote. What a cocky prick! I thought as I hastily sent him a message, “Actually size doesn’t matter,” I clicked send and patted myself on the back. Very happy with myself I didn’t even know if he would respond, but I felt that at the very least I put one arrogant NYC man in his place.

A little time went by and then I saw his little note back. “The thing about that is, nobody has ever told me they wished I was shorter,” I saw in bright Bumble yellow as the alert came through on my home screen. I felt a little bit of a chill even though I didn’t want to. His nerve! We continued to go on like that with witty banter and flirty one liners for a couple of weeks before we decided to meet in person. He told me a date and time to meet him at Union Square and as the cab pulled up I saw this tall, handsome man waiting at the corner of 15th and the park. I knew it was going to be trouble.

how they asked

We both came to New York City exactly one year apart looking for a new beginning. We had our first date at a beautiful Gramercy Park back patio complete with big trees and tea lights that has since closed down (in true NYC fashion). Exactly one year later we prepared to go out for our first year anniversary, little did I know what was in store. We headed to Gramercy where he said that we could go to a bar near where we had our first date. Since the first place had closed this was the next best thing, he said. We walked through a chic, Moroccan themed bar and go to the little garden outside. I prepared to order a drink but see him peering anxiously through the fence. I didn’t think much of it and continued to search the menu for a glass of Sancerre.

All of the sudden, he got up, opened the door and walked through and I had no idea where he was going. “Come here, babe,” he said. I thought he was nuts. I cautiously followed him out and see the EXACT spot where we had our first date, except instead of a patio filled with people and tables, there was only one table, set for two. The table was covered with rose petals and candles, with a bottle of champagne waiting for us, as well as a bottle of the Sancerre I was eyeing earlier. It looked like something out of a movie.

In my mind I still didn’t know what was going on. “He should have saved this for the proposal,” I thought to myself, completely shell-shocked. We sit down and cheered to a year filled with love and adventure, and then he got up saying we needed a photo. I saw him look nervous. “What is happening?” I thought to myself as my tall, confident boyfriend started to look a little dizzy. I see him fumble with his camera as he gave his phone to the waitress. And then I knew. He sat back down and looked me in the eyes. I didn’t know what to do so I kissed him.

He told me he loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. He told me he wanted to marry me. Then I saw it, a gorgeous round diamond ring in his big sturdy hand, waiting for me to say something.

It took me a minute as my heart beat so hard I thought it would pop right out of my chest. “YES!” I said. I looked at him with his big brown eyes, the same ones I met exactly one year ago sitting in that exact same spot. At that moment I knew what I came to New York for. At that moment everything made sense.
