How We Met
We met in middle school health class, though we didn’t become friends until our freshman year in high school. We became best friends over the years, from talking on the phone for hours to just being together all the time. People speculated when we would date, but we insisted we were just friends. When we were sixteen years old, we went to the Homecoming Dance together as friends. Before we left for the dance, I knew I was in trouble when he pulled a corsage out from his backpack and put it on my wrist. Then, as we were taking photos before the dance with our friends, he gets down on one knee and asks me to marry him. He even had a ring!!! Now, we were barely sixteen and I knew he was kidding. However, he knew I would be embarrassed and look bad for refusing him in front of our friends. They all were screaming at me to just accept his love, as Cody winked at me and acted upset. We spent the rest of the night having a blast and dancing together. Our friendship changed at that point, and just over a month later on 11/11/10, we officially started dating. From that point on, we’ve experienced many milestones together. We graduated high school, Cody bought his first house at nineteen years old, we moved in together, I graduated college Summa Cum Laude, and we’ve both advanced within our careers. In the midst of all this, we added two dogs to our little family, made a lot of memories, and began to travel together.
how they asked
Cody and I had been on many vacations together, so it wasn’t abnormal when we planned another leaving on October 14th. Cody knows I love taking nice photos together (what girl doesn’t!?), so taking the formal photos on Cruise Elegant night was always a highlight for me. Being that we had been together for almost seven years at this point, I thought I could read Cody like the back of my hand and would “know” when he would propose. I was certain it wasn’t going to happen on the cruise. On the first full day of the cruise, we got all dolled up and went up to take photos. My best friend and her boyfriend were on the cruise with us, so we went through a few backgrounds taking photos together and as couples. We got to one background where the prop was a white ottoman. At first, the photographer had both of us sitting. Then, he motioned for Cody to move behind me. As Cody got up, he knelt down on one knee. Before he could say anything, my mind flashed back to almost seven years to the day when Cody jokingly proposed to me. I had always thought what I’d say when Cody proposed and how I’d react; well, I blurted out “Are you kidding!?”, because I honestly didn’t believe this moment was actually happening. He laughed, said no, then asked me if I would marry him. I blankly stared at him for a moment, dumbfounded, asked him if we was kidding once again, and he again told me that he was being serious. I said “Yes!” of course, and onlookers around us applauded. The room was still spinning at that point. Cody and I enjoyed the rest of our cruise with our little secret because I wanted to tell my grandparents in person and didn’t want anyone to ruin the surprise. I was so excited to tell my grandma and record her reaction. Her reaction did not disappoint!! It was a magical cruise, and one to remember for sure!
