Makayla and Zach

How We Met

Zach and I met our Sophomore year of high school (in Ms. Harper’s biology class to be exact). I had just moved to Arizona from New Hampshire, so obviously I knew no one at school. I remember on the first day of school, I got to class early since I did not want to get lost. This allowed me to see everyone come into the classroom and I remember when I saw Zach walk in, I just knew he was the one. There was just something about him and his presence that just got to me. We began to have mutual friends and then became friends, our friendship grew in biology class. We both dated other people but always remained good friends. The summer before junior year, he started texting me more and more (and we were both single) and we never looked back. He went back to his home state of Ohio that summer and lost his phone on a rollercoaster at Cedar Point. I remember getting texts from different Ohio numbers because he used his friend’s phones to text me so that I didn’t lose interest in him! In late June of 2011 we had our first date. We saw Green Lantern, I told him it was just as friends and that I would pay him back.

His pay back was to a Diamondbacks game with my family (pretty good if you ask me), it was then when I knew even more that he was the one. We always joke that we are just like Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively because they fell in love making the movie and we fell in love at the movie. August 26, 2011 is when Zach asked me to be his girlfriend– actually he said “Since we’re pretty much already dating, will you be my girlfriend?”. How could I turn that down? I liked him so much and I was just so excited! We were inseparable, we literally did everything together. I went to all of his baseball games, he went to all of my cheer competitions and any games that I cheered at, we went to all school dances together including Junior and Senior Prom, we graduated high school together and then moved on to college together. Fast forward to now: We are still inseparable and do everything together. We are both college graduates and have full time jobs, we live in a great apartment together with a kitty baby and couldn’t be happier. It really is amazing to be able to grow with and love your best friend.

how they asked

On February 25, 2017 Zach and I went for a weekend in Sedona, AZ. We went for a late Valentines Day celebration and our 5 1/2 year anniversary! We drove up that morning and got to Sedona a little early, so we were able to go to my FAVORITE place in Sedona, the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village. The last time that I was there, I remember seeing Love Locks (like the ones in Paris) and told Zach that was all I wanted to do for Valentines Day. We couldn’t find them so we decided to get a bite to eat. Zach just wanted to get a quick snack but if you’ve ever been there– it’s all sit down places. So we grab some appetizers and decide to look for the Love Locks one more time before we leave. WE FOUND THEM! I was so excited! I asked him what I should put on it and we decided to put our initials and the date (2/25/17).

We made our Love Lock and it instantly became one of the best days of my life. We then had to go check into the hotel. Zach really wanted to go on a specific hike, I kept asking to go the next day because I was so tired. He said that he really wanted to do this hike at sun set. So, I got dressed and asked him if I should wear a beanie or headband (it’s cold in Sedona). He told me the beanie, so I put on the beanie and brought the headband for our dinner that was later. We leave the hotel and drive to the trail. Zach was acting so strange the whole day and wouldn’t stop texting– it was weird. We get to our destination, Cathedral Rock. We walk this beautiful trail that is against the creek and we get to a point where everyone has stopped to take pictures with the mountain. It was SO beautiful. We noticed that there was a couple that was eloping in that very spot. Zach was acting so strange and looked sick to his stomach.

I saw that the trail went on and told him that we should keep going. He told me that he wanted to take a cliche picture of me and the mountains with my back facing him. So, I thought that we were doing that but he wasn’t taking the picture so I turned back around to see what was up. AND there he was on one knee!!! I was so surprised, I couldn’t even speak! I remember I said “oh my god”, nodded yes, took off my promise ring and immediately gave him my hand. He told me he wanted to spend forever with me and I cried like a baby.

He stood up to hug me and while hugging me, he said “I had to recruit some help”. I had no idea what that meant, I thought he meant one of the photographers that we walked past on the trail but then my two best friends ran out of the woods! They helped him plan everything and were camped out in the woods for over 5 hours! It was literally the best day and weekend of my life. I cannot believe that I get to spend forever with the boy from biology class that became my best friend and high school sweetheart. I am so lucky!
