MaKayla and Asheton
How We Met
Asheton and I met for the first time in 2013. We locked eyes on each other at a clothing store (lol right) as I was walking in and he was walking out. I said “Hi” and he managed to mutter out a “hey” in a low tone as he hurried out the door. I didn’t really think anything about it because I had a boyfriend at the time and he had a girlfriend. That continued for the next couple of years.
I never had his number, but he added me on Snapchat previously. We reconnected when I reached out to him after his nanny died in July 2015. I told him I was sorry about his loss and that I was praying for him because I could relate to the impact of losing a grandparent. We (mostly me because I guess he was nervous ;) ) continued to talk every day after. I got tired of messaging him on Snapchat, so I asked for his number. After talking to him for a while, I immediately took interest in him, but he never got the hint. He did NOT get the hint that I was flirting because I liked him. He finally picked up the hint. The rest was history.
Our first time hanging out was at a Georgia game. We were both SO nervous; we barely spoke to each other on the way to Athens. When we got to the game, he finally started to loosen up. Me on the other hand, not so much. He tried sooo hard to get me to hold his hand. After what seemed like a century, I finally gave in. Later that night, we spent over six hours just talking. Talking about life, our past, everything. He was so easy to talk to (that’s one thing I adore about him).
October 1, 2015. Man, I loved that day. We went to church that night and I totally felt God’s presence there that night (wasn’t sure what that was all about). We came home and it was pretty late. We stood outside saying our goodbyes and he just grabbed me. We hugged for what seemed like an hour. I pulled away and he looked me straight in the eyes and asked in the sweetest way, “will you be mine?” Of course, I said yes. Little did I know this would be the beginning of forever.
how they asked
On a dreary, rainy evening, Asheton convinced me that we had won a free photo shoot. I was reluctant to go because I just knew my outfit, hair, and makeup would be a wreck. After several minutes of back and forth, I gave him to his convincing and got ready. We pull to this remote field on a back road. A quaint, little chapel sat on the field with trees spread throughout. I was in awe of the beauty surrounding around us. We began taking pictures in the field and the photographer was creating poses for us to do. I so wanted to go see inside the chapel, but Asheton and the photographer insisted I had to wait because she had more picture ideas for the chapel.
Finally, we enter the chapel and I immediately felt God’s presence. Although this tiny little building wouldn’t be your ideal place of worship, the overwhelming sense of Jesus filled the air inside. We take some more pictures and the photographer directed Asheton hold me with one arm and for me to look down, smile, and close my eyes. While my eyes were closed, Asheton had a box in his hand.
While my eyes were still closed, the photographer told me to grab his hand. Once I grabbed his hand, I opened my eyes. Complete utter shock ran through my body. I immediately teared up and asked him “Are you serious?” Asheton stood in front of me and poured his entire heart and soul out about how he felt about me and our relationship. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I couldn’t get a yes out fast enough. I loved the fact that Asheton incorporated a chapel into the proposal. Our faith is something that strongly connects us together and we strive the honor God in everything that we do. He is so thoughtful and sweet. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with him ❤
