Maiya and Joey

How We Met

It was a week after I had gotten home from college, and I was just starting to get into the routine of working my two jobs. My only plan for the summer was to make as much money as possible to pay off my apartment in Minnesota. That first Saturday back in Beloit, I decided to text my friend, Mary, out of the blue to see if she wanted to get together and catch up. That night, the plan was to go to a friend of Mary’s house, who also just so happened to be a host family for some of the Snapper’s (a professional baseball team). Keep in mind that it was a Saturday, so normally the Snapper’s games are at 7, but luckily enough, that Saturday they had a game at 2 in the afternoon. Because of this, a few of the Snapper’s happened to be at the bonfire that night. Now this house we were at was not Joey’s host family’s, in fact, he rarely came over to this house at all. I believe it was nothing short of fate that we were both there that night. I have a preconceived notion that all of the Snapper’s players are exactly that, players. If we hadn’t been introduced that night, I would’ve never seen how sweet he was, and there would be no Maiya and Joey today. That Saturday, 8 months ago, I really lucked out.

how they asked

We had planned to go to Lake Geneva for the day and spend some time looking at shops and having lunch. It was the first place we ever went to for a weekend getaway, so it was a special place for us. He kept bringing up how he wished we could spend the night there, but I didn’t want to because we had dinner reservations with my family that night. He wouldn’t stop asking and asking and finally, he said “fine we don’t have to, but it would have been a really special night.” Nothing clicked in my head until we were on our way home and I realized that maybe the special night we was referring to had to do with a proposal. The whole ride home I was thinking, “great I ruined his proposal. He’ll never do it now.” Then, we get back early and decide to head to the restaurant that is on the first floor of the hotel to wait for my parents there. Joey said he wanted to check out one of the rooms in the hotel for when his parents came to town to see if they’d like it. Little did I know that he had arranged with the front desk that they would give us the key to our room for the night until we got up to the room. The bed was covered in rose petals, there was champagne and chocolate covered strawberries, and that is when Joey got down on one knee.
