How We Met

Sam and I met in undergrad. We were both student ambassadors at the school and both signed up to work the same event during Welcome Week for the incoming freshman. We talked for hours during the event, and a few weeks later, he asked me on a date. After a few amazing dates, he asked me to be his girlfriend.

After finishing our time in undergraduate school, I went to pharmacy school and he went to law school, and we worked through being a long-distance couple. Sam just graduated from law school this year, but we are still long distance, and we take turns driving four hours to see each other on our weekends off.

How They Asked

Sam came to visit me in Pittsburgh for my birthday. He brought me a beautiful bouquet of daisies (my favorite flowers), and we had a lovely, simple celebration in the evening. The day after, we went on a nice walk, and I showed Sam the spot on the river overlooking the city that I thought would be perfect for a picnic. Sam and I went back to my apartment, packed a picnic basket with snacks and champagne, and we went back to the river for a picnic lunch. Sam told me he had been saving his bottle of champagne for a special occasion and that his graduation and my birthday were worthy of popping the bottle.

There were two other groups of people in the little cove when we arrived, and we set up the picnic blanket under an old tree arching over the river. We set up the cheese, grapes, and tomatoes on the charcuterie board, and I opened my phone camera to remember this picture-perfect moment. I asked Sam if we could take out the champagne early on, but he said he wanted to wait until the other groups of people left. We spent the next few hours talking and laughing, ranking our favorite cheeses from the picnic, and soaking up the sunshine. Eventually, the last group of people left the little cove on the river, and it was just the two of us secluded from the trail by the flowers and the trees.

Sam commented that the day was perfect, and we reminisced about how memorable the weekend has been. I nudged Sam to break out the champagne again to toast to a perfect day, and he said okay. But, when he went into his backpack, he pulled out a little square box instead and positioned himself one knee. I was so surprised that I had to ask him if I should stand up! Sam asked me to marry him, and, of course, I said yes! He put the ring on my finger and kissed me. We both enjoyed a glass of champagne and admired the ring in the sunlight. We walked back to my apartment and spent the evening telling our families and friends the good news.
