Maggie and Brock

Proposal Ideas Grand Canyon National Park

How We Met

I used to play beach volleyball at Grand Canyon University. My freshman year I had just started the season. One game, the Student Engagement department of the school was handing out free tank-tops to promote the beach volleyball team. Brock showed up wanting a shirt with his friend Michaela. While in line, Brock saw me and said to his friend, “I don’t know who that is, but I’m going to date her”. After this, he proceeded to look up GCU’s beach volleyball roster so that he could find my name. He figured out it was Maggie and followed me on social media. I never received the notification that he followed me so I could not follow him back but eventually saw a very cute boy come across my Instagram feed and decided to give him a follow. After summer, sophomore year rolled around. We still had never met. Throughout the first semester of sophomore year, Brock knew that my beach team would get done practicing at around 12:30 and be in the Student Union eating lunch. Conveniently, that is when Brock’s class on Tuesdays and Thursdays got out so him and his friend Michaela, would walk through the Union to see if they could find me (since we had yet to meet actually face-to-face). This game of tag, so to speak, went on for a few months: Brock trying to find me around campus and me trying to find Brock. We were determined to meet but also not direct message each other on social media to meet up. People would ask Brock if he was interested in any girls or talking to anyone, and he would always reply with, “besides Maggie, nope!”. Some told him to stop pursuing me because we had never met (and some may say that it was borderline creepy seeing as we have never actually met or talked. I thought it was cute). Long story short, right before Christmas break I decided to direct message Brock on Instagram to tell him that I loved the movie Tarzan too, which he had just posted about. After messaging for a little bit, Brock said that he would like to meet up after the break and become real friends. Of course, I wanted that too. So after Christmas break, on Thursday, January 12th, we met for the first time in a coffee shop on campus. We talked and laughed and enjoyed each other’s company for 7 hours until we got kicked out. Brock got my number that night and we had our first date Saturday night. He took me to get tacos and then to his favorite mountain spot in Phoenix. After this, I took him to my favorite mountain spot as well. We were out until 3:30 in the morning getting to know one another. We continued to hang out that week and on January 22nd, we starting dating. 10 days after the meeting. Now, after 1 year and 9 months of dating, we are engaged and looking forward to an entire life together.

how they asked

Brock and I planned a day trip to Flagstaff, Arizona to finish it off by having a picnic and watching the sunset at the Grand Canyon. First, we went to Viola’s Pumpkin Patch. We then went to my favorite burger joint, Diablo Burger. We ate the food in the car as we began the journey to see the Grand Canyon at sunset. I knew we were going to meet a few of Brock’s roommates there so I did not think too much of that. When we got there, we grabbed our picnic basket and blanket and set off to find our picnic spot. Before we did, we met up with Brock’s roommates to quickly say hi. What I did not know is when we did this, one of our photographer friends who Brock flew in from Nashville was there hiding amongst the many other photographers.

Brock’s roommates had driven with her up to the Grand Canyon and successfully performed a switcheroo where Christina started following us. Brock allowed me to pick out our perfect picnic spot. I love to take videos and so Brock said it might be a good idea to set my camera down to get a fun video for us. Little did I know, I would be filming our proposal. Brock told me to look at the Grand Canyon so he could get some pictures of me. This is when we pulled out the ring he had been hiding in his camera case, and put it in his pocket. We stood in front of the camera, right at sunset, and did what I thought was going to be a cute video.

Maggie and Brock's Engagement in Grand Canyon National Park

Brock had other plans. He grabbed me and looked me in the eyes and told me how much he loved me (We think. It was all such a blur that we don’t really remember what we said) and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was so overjoyed and excited, I didn’t even know what to do. I could not say anything except “Of course!”. This is when Christina revealed herself and once again, I was overjoyed. I am so excited to spend my entire life with the man of my dreams. A perfect place, a perfect ring, a perfect photographer, and a perfect man. God is so good to have given me this.
