How We Met
Adam and I met the summer going into our senior year at the University of Oklahoma. We had a lot of the same friends, but never hung out until then. We would even be at the same date parties or in the same room with each other but had no idea at the time. Two of my best friends and I ended up going on a spring break trip with him and some of his friends to Destin our senior year of college and that’s where we sort of hit it off. He asked me on a date pretty soon after that and then we officially started dating April 26, 2012, just about a month after our spring break trip!
how they asked
Adam and I got engaged on July 18, 2015, and at that time had been together for a little over 3 years. (3 years, 2 months, and 22 days to be exact, but who was counting)? I had been waiting and not so secretly tagging Adam in ring photos on Instagram for over a year. I also kept asking him to go look at rings, but each time got shot down. Finally, he told me we would go after we got back from the beach. (Later on I found out he did this to shut me up because he had the ring since May). Each summer my family goes on vacation to a spot near Rosemary Beach in Florida. Adam has been with us a couple times and I had always imagined getting proposed to there. This summer my family (minus Clare who was interning in New York), Adam, and Abby’s boyfriend Ryan went to the beach. I knew that Adam wouldn’t propose without my whole family there, so I didn’t think it was going to happen. I was bummed because that meant I would have to wait another year to have my dream proposal…OR SO I THOUGHT! Anyway…we got to the beach Saturday morning, after spending all Friday night driving. The plan that night was to get ready, take pictures on the beach, and go to dinner. I was confused why we were going to take pictures the first night because we always wait until a couple days before the trip is over to take family pictures. My parents said they were going to the grocery store while we finished getting ready. While they were there I was telling Adam how we never go on trips like our friends do and we don’t ever do anything spontaneous. Poor guy, he had this whole thing planned and I was beating him down. Oops, sorry Adam! Finally, my parents walk through the door and who is behind them, but Clare. (Side note: The big joke in my family is that Clare always gets what she wants, so of course she would GET to be in New York all summer and then GET to fly in to Florida for our beach vacation after our parents told her she couldn’t come). She started getting ready and I told her that while she was here it would’ve been the perfect time for Adam to propose. She said, “yeah” and we kept getting ready. As we were walking down to the beach I was getting curious and wondering if maybe it actually was going to happen. I looked at Adam’s pants pockets, but didn’t see a box, so thought maybe I was just reading too much into the situation. We started taking pictures, Ryan and Abby took some pictures “walking” down the beach, and then it was Adam and my turn to do the same. As we were “walking” down the beach for the pictures, we kept walking. Adam started rubbing my hand and talking about how we needed to figure out what we were going to do for my birthday. At this point, I felt like it was about to happen. I know everyone says they don’t remember what the guy said to them while he was proposing, so I wanted to make sure that I knew what he was going to say to me. Finally we stopped and he turned to me and before he could even say anything to me I said, “Is this really happening?!” Then as he started kneeling down on one knee, he said something about how he knows I think he is not spontaneous, but he hoped that this was spontaneous enough. After that I don’t remember. It was perfect and beautiful and better than I had imagined! My family was taking pictures the whole time We went out to dinner after and this is where it started to hit me and of course I kept randomly crying, then smiling really big, then crying, then smiling really big. While my dad was buying wine and toasting us, then buying another bottle and toasting us again, three times over. I don’t know how anyone kept that secret from me for so long, but it was absolutely perfect and I can’t wait to spend forever with him!!
