How We Met
Way back in 2013, Will and I met at Hillcrest High School — and I immediately had a crush. I didn’t know much about him, only that he was a year older than me and that we had mutual friends, but even then I knew he was someone I wanted to get to know. We got each other’s phone numbers and got to know each other a little, but things didn’t start to happen until a few months later during the summertime. We slowly started to hang out often with our friends, talk more and more, and finally went on our first date on August 20, 2013, the day before school started!
From there, we never looked back. We both knew we had something special — it was (and still is) so easy to be together, and he was the first guy I hadn’t gotten bored with! We both went to Clemson University and loved every moment, so Clemson has turned into our happy place. Years went by, our love grew stronger, we became a part of each other’s families, and now I can’t imagine a day without him. There was never an “aha” moment where I knew I wanted to marry him — there was just always a feeling that this was a forever thing. Will is truly my better half, and he gets me like no one else can.
How They Asked
Exactly one week before the day of our engagement, I came home from a graduation trip to Italy — and picked up a pug puppy along the way! Will and I have been obsessed with pugs for years, so we were anticipating Chip’s arrival for quite some time (and he did miss me a little)! We were excited to make plans as soon as we could, and Will wanted to take Chip to Clemson to walk around campus and find a place to eat outside. He called a restaurant on Clemson’s golf course and made us a reservation; I only thought it was to make sure we had a place to eat with Chip!
Saturday came, and we headed up to Clemson. From what we had talked about, I knew our engagement was coming sometime during the summer but really didn’t think it was going to be this specific day. We were in athletic clothes, hanging outside all day, my mom was at work — it just didn’t add up to me. We walked Chip around campus, played with him on Bowman Field, took him to Y Beach to attempt swimming, and left to get ready for dinner. Big shoutout to my Grandma for suggesting I bring a dress!
Will and I decided to go early and walk Chip around a bit before sitting down, and he led me to a path by the water beyond the patio. When we got to the spot he had in mind, he grabbed both of my hands, and I immediately started crying. I knew that was the moment we had been waiting so long for. Just us, in our favorite place, our sweet little pug, and a pretty view — I couldn’t have asked for more.
It was truly the best moment of my life, and I’ll never forget that initial excitement, shocked, surreal feeling. We took some pictures, enjoyed dinner (although everyone else enjoyed our puppy more LOL), and headed home to celebrate that night with our family.
After the fact, I’m still wondering how Will acted so normal that day. We were together the WHOLE DAY and I didn’t suspect a thing. I think it’s hilarious he had the ring in the car door.
After 6 years, we couldn’t be more ready for July 11, 2020!
