Matt and I have been dating long distance for two years with him being in Kansas City for med school, and me being in Dallas for my job. He surprised me with a flight to visit him for the weekend for a “barbecue competition” that his family was participating in, which is a big deal in Kansas City. The night of the proposal he pretended like we were going to get supplies for the barbecue, but instead we drove to a small airport where we met the hot air balloon company and photographer. At this point I knew something was going on. We drove to another location where the hot air balloon would take off, and the photographer took pictures of us while the balloon was being set up. The captain told us to step inside the balloon for pictures and that’s when Matt got down on one knee. After the proposal we took off in the hot air balloon and had champagne after we landed. Little did I know the original plan was to go on a helicopter ride, but due to mechanical issues all flights were cancelled leaving Matt scrambling for a backup plan with less than 24 hours to go. With the help of his mom and sisters he was able to find a hot air balloon company that was happy to help. What seemed like a disaster at first ended up being the perfect proposal!
