How We Met
Mason and I “met” the summer after we both graduated high school. As funny as it may sound, he followed me on Twitter and sent me a direct message asking if I was going to UNC Charlotte in the fall. After saying yes, he told me that he was going to play football there and wanted to know if he would have a “fan cheering in the stands” for him, aka me! I remember thinking to myself, “There’s no way I’m messaging this kid back, I’ll probably never meet him!” Fast forward to the second semester of freshman year. I remember sitting in the common area of my residence hall with my best friends, Sam and Taylor, when two huge guys came walking in. One of them was Kyle, who was in our Theatre class, and the other one I recognized, but couldn’t remember where I knew him from. As they walked over to us, I immediately knew where I had seen him. It was the guy who had messaged me on Twitter all those months ago! When Kyle introduced us, the first thing that came out of my mouth was, “You’re that guy that messaged me on Twitter!” (Way to be subtle, Madison). After many months of “talking” on and off, Mason finally asked me to be his girlfriend after UNC Charlotte’s very first football game in the Alpha Delta Pi house!
how they asked
Back in April, my sister and I were going to have our graduation pictures taken all around campus because you know, that’s what you do when you graduate. I was extremely excited because we were all dressed up and Mason was coming down from Campbell University to sneak in a few pictures with me! Let me just tell you right now, I have never been so hot in my entire life. We started at about 10:00am and it was already 90 degrees outside. Imagine wearing a dress, graduation robe, multiple stoles, cords, two medals, and a graduation cap (I also had extensions in and man do those make you sweat)! So if you know me at all, you know that I absolutely HATE being hot. When I’m hot, I start getting grumpy and irritated beyond belief. We had been taking pictures for about an hour or so when we decided to move towards the football field. I was all for it because it was our last stop of the day and I was PUMPED to go home and take a nap. We were on the hill overlooking the football stadium and I wanted to take a picture with my back facing the camera so that you could see the decorations on my graduation cap. Not even two seconds after they took the picture, I hear Mason say “turn around.” As soon as I heard his voice, I knew. My eyes filled up with tears as I turned around because there he was – my 6 foot 4 best friend, boyfriend, partner in crime, and love of my life, down on one knee. He asked me to spend the rest of my life with him, and to be honest the only thing I could think of was that it was about damn time!
