How We Met
Jared and I met our junior year of college while I was at Loyola University in Baltimore and he was at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. We met through mutual friends (who are now married) the first month into the school year. He asked for my number and messaged me the next day, which led to talking all day, every day for the rest of the week, leading us to our first date that following weekend. On our first date in Annapolis, we sat at dinner for 3 hours talking and laughing and both knew that this was it. He told me he was sold since the minute he started talking to me and as cliche, as it sounds, I knew I was sitting across from my husband (I told my mom the next day I was going to marry him). The next day, we met for coffee and the rest is history! We were inseparable the rest of our time in college and after graduation in 2018, we moved across the county together where he is now stationed in San Diego! It’s been an amazing 3 years together!
How They Asked
Jared and I had been talking about getting engaged since we pretty much started dating our junior year of college. Once we moved to California, work and life got busy and getting engaged seemed further and further away. Jared was messing with me a lot saying I’d be waiting a few more years until I’d have a ring on my finger, but I had a feeling it’d be happening by the time we celebrated our 3 year anniversary in October. Well, on August 24th, we had a military event we attended called the Surface Warfare Ball in downtown San Diego at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Prior to the ball, we had a pregame at our friends and then headed to the hotel for cocktail hour. I had zero thoughts about it happening this night because the ball ran on a schedule. After cocktail hour, we were seated for dinner, listened to speeches, and had appetizers served.
Shortly after appetizers were finished, Jared told me that it was still light out if we wanted to get photos since we hadn’t taken any that night so far (and I wanted pictures in my new dress)! Our friends, who had known Jared was planning on this for weeks, chimed in that they also wanted photos before dinner was served so again, I thought nothing of it. We went up to the terrace the hotel has and made our way to an amazing spot that overlooked the San Diego Bay.
As I handed my phone to my friend to take pictures, Jared started kissing me and asked me if I knew how much he loved me. That’s when I realized what was happening and started crying as he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! I was in complete shock, was shaking and sobbing, and ran to hug him before even saying YES! All our friends were there to share at the moment and I couldn’t have been more surprised. It was the most amazing moment, beautiful setting, and a perfect proposal! We are both on cloud 9 and are planning a summer 2020 wedding!
