Marriage Proposal Ideas in Shenandoah National Park

How We Met

In August 2014 I moved to a very small town for college, right out of high school. I had one friend, who had moved with me. I got a job through a girl I met at school and she was from the area. She was the first friend I made and we had several classes together, we clicked and eventually ended up being roommates. She knew my now fiance because he was also from the area and he came into our work a lot. I had not met him yet but she told me about him and told me I should add him on Snapchat. Me being me, I didn’t add him on Snapchat or try to communicate with him in any way. We ended up following each other on Instagram and that is where he messaged me first. Anyone that knew me in high school knew that I did not date, I wasn’t into dating because I thought all guys sucked. I had never had a boyfriend, I was 100% convinced they were all a waste of time. We had ended up messaging back and forth a few times on Instagram and we eventually started texting. He seemed better than most guys from the start but I thought maybe it was because he was a little older. I was 18 and he was 21.

Proposal Ideas Shenandoah National Park

He asked me to hang out with him and go on a jeep ride the first time we met. I knew that was something I would enjoy so I thought why not, and went. We had a really good time and he was still a nice guy, at this point I had already assumed it was too good to be true. After we met for the first time in October, we kept hanging out and he continued to prove me wrong on my stereotypes of all guys. A couple months had gone by and at this point, I thought I was in trouble, I did what I never let myself do, I had real feelings for this guy. I didn’t even know what to think about it, I’m pretty sure I even tried to talk myself out of it but I couldn’t. We were together every day, and then on December 20th he asked me if I would be his girlfriend. I didn’t even know what to say, it took me so long to say yes that it was December 21st (literally). I still didn’t know what would happen but I was willing to take the risk. I never wanted a relationship like all the ones I had seen, I wanted trust, faithfulness, stability and so much more than most relationships are lacking these days. Now 3 1/2 years later that’s what we have. I’m by no means saying it is a perfect relationship but it’s all I could ask for and more. Now we are engaged and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. PS to all the girls who thought all guys sucked like me. A lot of them do but there are still some perfect ones out there, don’t give up.

Where to Propose in Shenandoah National Park

how they asked

I had entered a giveaway for a free couples adventure photography session on Facebook and Instagram. I REALLY wanted to win, we do a lot of adventuring and this just seemed right up our alley! I tagged as many people as possible to get as many entries into the contest as I could. I still doubted I would win because I usually don’t win anything. Around a week later I got tagged in a post by the photographer and I WON. I was so excited, I told my boyfriend and immediately started planning outfits in my head. I spoke with the photographer and we made plans to do a sunrise session in Shenandoah National Park, which also was exciting to me because we got to make a little trip out of the session.

The photographer and I had made plans for me to bring a dress that would flow in the wind and I was going to change closer to the top of the mountain so I didn’t have to hike all the way up in the dress. What I didn’t know is that my boyfriend had messaged the photographer and told her he wanted to propose during the shoot! I never knew they communicated so that I wouldn’t be suspicious of anything, her and I stayed in contact through the plans and such and made all the arrangements. We live about 4 hours from where the session was going to be so we arrived the day before since it was a sunrise session and we needed to start hiking at 6 am. 4:30 am came early the day of the shoot, I got ready and did my hair and makeup but tried to keep it minimal since after all it was an adventure session and we would be hiking over 4 miles.

We started the hike at 6 am with a goal to be at the top around 7 am. My boyfriend and the photographer had planned to do the proposal almost first thing once we got to the top because the sunrise is the best lighting. Once we were almost to the top I stopped to change into my dress and they continued on to the top to get things set up. As soon as I got to the top she started to position us and I thought we were just going to start with the shoot. I noticed my boyfriend’s hand was in his pocket but it was super cold at the top of the mountain so I ignored it.

Only a few seconds later he got down on one knee, I was in complete shock. He explained to me how much he loved me and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life by my side. I was so happy yet so shocked, all I could do was hug him. It was still very cold out with it being only mid-March and in the mountains, so we were all freezing with the wind blowing, we would take breaks to warm up with jackets and blankets. Once we had got all the images I changed back out of my dress, we started to hike back down and we stopped to take some more pictures along the way. Everything about it was perfect and I’m so excited to marry the man of my dreams!
