How We Met
Chris and I met when we were just 17 and 19 years old at a bible study bonfire. A friend and I attended the bonfire on a whim- we didn’t know anyone there and impulsively and randomly decided to attend. After meeting Chris, I couldn’t get him out of my head. Something about this guy with the cute dimples and his heart for the Lord drove me to ask a mutual friend for his phone number. It was very unlike me to do this, and neither of us can remember what exactly I texted him, but I’m sure glad I did! Chris came over to my parent’s house a few days later and we talked from 4 PM to 3 AM about everything from life to our relationship with God to our favorite sports teams. Even after a few nights just getting to know one another, I knew there was something very special about this man. On my 18th birthday, Chris showed up to my parent’s house to surprise me and asked me if I would be his girlfriend. I said “yes” and the adventures began. Throughout college, tough times, great times, internships, final exams, first jobs, failures, success, family illness, getting our adopted fur-baby kitten, Evy, and the crazy ups and downs of life- we have continued to fall more and more in love with one another. I knew when I first met Chris that he was someone who would have a huge impact in my life. Now, I get to spend the rest of my life with him!
how they asked
how they asked: I was up at my family’s cabin on Dead Lake in northern Minnesota with my college roommates enjoying a weekend of girl-time. My friends were adamant that they should get dressed nicely and go into town to explore Battle Lake and do some shopping. Hesitantly, (I didn’t really want to go shopping- we were at the cabin for pete’s sake!) I agreed, and we went into town for the afternoon. While we were gone, Chris showed up at the cabin with our family and friends. Little did I know that our “shopping day” had ulterior motives- to get me out of the cabin! This entire day had been planned for weeks with secret meetings between Chris and my mom, future mother in law, sister, and girlfriends. As we got back to the cabin and I got out of the car, I heard music playing and looked towards the dock. The dock was decorated with flowers and photos everywhere. At first, I didn’t know what was going on, until I heard “Crazy” by Hunter Hayes start playing. (This was our first “song”). Each stair down to the dock had a different photo of our relationship- starting from our first date and ending with our most recent adventure. Overcome with emotion (I was already bawling at this point) I took my time on each stair reminiscing on each photo and what it represented, until I got about halfway down the stairs and was so anxious and excited I ran the rest of the way down to the dock.
At the end of the dock, the same dock where I spent my childhood fishing, swimming, and sun-bathing, was a cooler of ice and a bottle of my favorite wine (Sogn Blush from Cannon River Winery) with a note to “Enjoy while I waited.” A few minutes later, Chris pulled up in the boat, pulled into the dock, and we hugged with tears streaming down both of our faces. When Chris finally got down on one knee, I was crying so hard, I fell down with him. I don’t actually remember saying “yes,” only being so happy it felt like something out of a dream.
The lake where I spent my childhood growing up at- my favorite place in the entire world-ended up being right where I got engaged to the love of my life. The best part of the entire day was when I turned towards the cabin and was greeted by our friends and family standing on the top of the stairs waiting to celebrate with a thoughtful engagement party. Chris thought of every single detail to make this day perfect: having lots of champagne on hand, hiring a photographer (Hayley Huotari- https://www.hayleyhuotari.com/ ) to capture every moment, and having the most important people in our lives there with them. But, he couldn’t have pulled this off without the help of our amazing and supportive friends and family. As we enter into our next adventure of marriage we feel very blessed to have such wonderful friends and family walking alongside us. July 9, 2017 will always be their favorite day (Until September 22, 2018, that is!).
