How We Met
Dallin and I met at The University of Utah in the most unromantic way possible… at a frat party! We talked throughout the night, but I didn’t really think much of it. As I was leaving the party, he caught me at the door and asked for my number. The next day, I received a text from Dallin asking if I would go on a date with him. I had never gone on a formal date before, so I was extremely apprehensive. I called my parents and told them that a boy had asked me to coffee, but that I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to go, and they told me that I had to go and give the boy a chance. I accepted his invitation (leaving out the fact that my parents were the driving force of why I was going) and a few days later he took me out to coffee.
We sat in that coffee shop and talked for hours, some of the fastest hours of my life, before he drove me to the class that was rudely interrupting our first date. I walked into class, and turned around and walked right out, knowing I would be unable to focus after the incredible afternoon I had just experienced. I smiled my whole walk home.
After that, we were inseparable. We started officially dating a few weeks later, I brought him home to meet my family in California after just two months of dating, and three years later I still get just as many butterflies when I see him as I did when he picked me up for that first coffee date. Between countless brunches, traveling to seven states, watching hours and hours of Netflix, and obsessing over any and all dogs we see, I have fallen so deeply in love with my forever friend.
how they asked
The day of my proposal, I was having a much needed girls-day with my little sister Katie Jane and my family-friend/practically my older sister, Kate. Kate had texted us a few weeks prior telling us to dress up so that we could go to a nice lunch downtown and that we would be getting mani/pedis. She has triplet boys and twin girls at home, so this day of pampering seemed well-deserved and nothing out of the ordinary. After eating brunch and having my nails painted the perfect shade of baby-blue, Kate told us that she had to swing by Red Butte Gardens to sign the boys up for a spring break camp. I told Katie Jane and Kate how Red Butte Gardens was one of the first places Dallin and I went when we started dating.
When we got to the gardens, the front desk said that they would allow us to walk the gardens so that Kate could see where the camp would be taking place. It had been snowing earlier that day, but the clouds had parted and the sun was shining on the snow-covered gardens. As we were walking, my and Dallin’s song, La Vie en Rose, began to play. I was about to turn to the girls to say “Hey, this is my and Dallin’s song!”, but before I could do that, I saw my friends Julian and Brent taking pictures of me in the distance. Dallin walked out from behind a pilar under a beautiful overhang that was covered with pictures of the two of us. After collapsing with emotion, I walked over to Dallin, who took my hand, and we began to dance.
I was already crying, but I began to sob halfway through the song when I looked up and my parents and little brother had walked out from behind the trees, surprising me by flying in from California (2:50 in the video is when I notice them). Once the song had ended, Dallin looked into my eyes and took me back to the day where we had come and sat on a bench in those gardens, and how he knew then that I was the one. He got down on one knee and proposed, and of course I accepted.
Anyone who knows me and Dallin knows that we are a perfect match. Needless to say, Dallin is the romantic one in this relationship, and he could not have planned a more perfect or personalized proposal. I cannot wait to spend the rest of our lives together laughing and loving one another.
