How We Met
We met when we were 14 at a church group. I kept kicking the back of his seat, being the obnoxious 14 year old that I was. We had mutual friends and lived in the same neighborhood but had never actually met. I though he was so cute, and I knew I couldn’t just leave without talking to him, or at least getting his number.
Once the night was coming to an end, I knew I had to gather my courage and say something. So I went up to him and thought he was acting funny so I asked him if something was wrong that’s when he explained to me that he had gotten a concussion in football.
Being the crazy 14 year old I was, I asked him “If I tell you a secret will you remember it?” He replied “Probably not…” I then mustered up every bit of courage I had and said “I think you are really hot.” he said “Oh, yeah I will definitely remember that.” He still remembers to this day. After about a year of talking, we started dating and over 5 years later, he proposed to me.
Although we were super young, Connor and I always knew we wanted to be together. We bring out the better qualities in each other. We also joke that no one else could deal with our craziness except one another.
He gave me a promise ring when we were 16 and I have worn it ever since, well until we got engaged. Once we started dating we also figured out that our moms had known each other for over 30 years. His mom taught my mom gymnastics growing up. We found all of these crazy coincidences that just showed how good we were for each other.
Once we graduated from high school, we went onto Northern Arizona University. Being together at school really helped us mature and showed us how badly we want to be together.
how they asked
Sedona has always been “our place”. We have always enjoyed hiking in Sedona and have done many of the hikes in the area. We are very outdoorsy and love to explore and adventure. We backpack and hike quite often. We have hiked in Yosemite, Flagstaff, Sedona, and San Diego. Sedona is by far the most amazing place ever. We try and come twice a month so I was not surprised when he had mentioned he wanted to go hiking there the weekend we got engaged.
After a trip home from Thanksgiving (where I thankfully had my nails done), we decided to make plans to go to our favorite place! I was so excited and picked out one of my favorite hikes, Courthouse Butte.
There was a possibility of snow and the road to get down there from Flagstaff is very windy so we weren’t sure if we would be able to do the hike or not. By the time Friday rolled around, the forecast showed no snow so we went to Sedona with our two friends. While it wasn’t snowing, it was awfully cold. It was 45 degrees to be exact.
I knew something was up with Connor because he was acting very nervous. A little while into the hike, we climbed up a large rock face and our friend Sierra said she wanted to take pictures of us on her camera. That is when Connor pulled me away and gave me his little speech, pulled off my promise ring, and proposed to me where of course I said “YES”.
It’s all a little blurry now, since I was having such an adrenaline rush. I couldn’t have asked for a more amazing way to be proposed than in my favorite place ever. I think that even though we’ve been engaged for almost a month, it still doesn’t feel real since we have always known we want to be together, either way I am happier than ever to be engaged to marry the man of my dreams. I can’t wait to embark on our biggest adventure yet.
