Maddy and Nate
How We Met
Nate and I actually met my freshman year in my environmental science class and we both struggled (failed) a test and we went up and asked her for help. Nate asked for my number to study for the next test so I gave it to him. At that time I was dating someone and so when he texted me he started to flirt so I didn’t reply. Fast forward a year later and I showed up at Wesley, which is an on-campus ministry at out college, and he was there and he played in the worship band as the lead guitar. We talked at a super bowl party and reminisced about our environmental science class and this time I wasn’t dating anyone. We became best friends and we prayed for and with one another daily. I knew from our first genuine conversation that he was someone that I wanted to know for a long time.
how they asked
So Nate and I started dating last May and I knew from the moment that I had met him that he was someone that I wanted to know for a very long time. He was kind, caring, funny, and really cute. Throughout the first couple of months of our relationship, I was itching to tell him that I loved him and how much I cared for him but we came to a decision to not say those three very special words until engagement. We both knew that we loved one another, but we did not want to say those words until we had made it official that we were going to spend the rest of our lives together. Now I am a very impulsive and expressive person so for me to not be able to tell him all of my feelings was very difficult but I knew that it would make that day even more special if we waited to say I love you. It also taught me how to show him that I loved him way more than I could ever tell him.
So here’s how it happened… Nate was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant and it was a big day. My family was there, his family was there, all of our friends were there to see him swear into this position and serve our country. After Nate was sworn in, he got the chance to make a speech and say his gratitude to certain people. He thanked all of his professors, his friends, and then he said that he had a couple of people that he wanted to recognize specifically. He thanked his parents, and then he thanked his brother, and then he looked at me. By this time he was crying, I was crying, and the entire room of people standing there was crying. He said, “I just have to brag on Maddy for a minute, because she has shown me was true love and true care is. And Maddy, I love you. And I wanted to take this opportunity to ask you if you would make me the luckiest man in the world and be my wife”.
As soon as he said those three words that I have been dreaming about for over a year, I knew it was happening and I could not control myself. I said yes and then celebrated with my family. The man in charge of military science (who is an infantry officer) was even crying. It was so emotional and it was an absolute dream. It was everything that I could have ever wished for and so much more.
