How We Met

Since the first time we met at BYU Hawaii we had a connection. One of our very first conversations we realized that we share the same birthday, crazy! We would see each other around campus and have short interactions, but during our first “real” conversation I felt like I was talking to myself. Everything just clicked. The first time we hung out we rode our bikes along the coast and talked all about our life and experiences. I knew I was into him since that first night. Since that day we’ve spent every day together and I love him more and more every single day.

how they asked

It was a beautiful Sunday evening in Hawaii. Cole and I had planned to go to watch the sunset at Kawela Bay, a secluded beach just 15 minutes from campus. Kawela Bay was really special to us because we spent our first Valentine’s Day there.

We held hands as we walked along the shore down to the World War 2 bunker at the point of the bay. I stepped up onto the bunker, not knowing that earlier that day Cole snuck away and carried a 150lbs cement block across the whole beach just so I could get up more easily – he really thought everything out!

Once I stood up everything happened so fast! I heard our close friends play our favorite song on the other side of the bunker. It was “Never Fade” by Jack Johnson and a couple months ago, Cole told me that it was a really special song because when he listened to it he always imagined his future wife.

Then, he got down on one knee and told me he wanted to spend forever with me then said “Will you marry me?” Of course, I said yes! I went to kiss him, but had to lift him up because he was frozen on his knee.

I was so teary-eyed and overwhelmed when I looked over and saw a gas tank on fire! He had spelled out “Marry Me?” with rope in the sand and planned to light it on fire, but the gas tank caught flames instead! We got off the bunker and I saw the side of the pillbox painted in big letters “Maddie & Cole Forever”.

It was a dream come true, and we didn’t lose any lives in the process :)
