How We Met
I met Dikens through my mom. My mom was out running errands and met a refreshingly respectful young Christian man. She instantly fell in love with his character and called me at home right there and then. I had just woken up when she called. She was so excited for me to speak to this nice Christian boy she had met. I was so embarrassed. I immediately apologized for my crazy mother. We got to talking and exchanged Snapchat and Instagram accounts. We immediately started talking to each other every day. And we just haven’t stopped talking since. We started as acquaintances, then friends, then we got into a relationship and then he proposed. I knew I was going to marry him within a few weeks. I was so drawn to him. I have never felt that comfortable with someone before. I knew he was the kind of man I could spend the rest of my life with. He’s kind. He’s loyal. He’s a man of God. He’s patient. And most importantly he’s the man for me.
How They Asked
We celebrate every month of our relationship. The 11th is when we met and the 18th is when we officially became a couple. So for the month of August Dikens told me his gift was a photoshoot to add pictures to our scrapbook (my gift for July). I was suspicious of him probably proposing but I tried to ignore my suspicion. We scheduled the shoot for August 17th, a day earlier than our “monthly anniversary”. I was instructed to buy a dress, not to schedule any other activities for the day and to be ready by 6:30 pm. I mostly followed the instruction (I ran a few errands, but in my defense, I don’t have a lot of time off! ?) When I finished getting dressed my mom sat on the porch with me to wait for Dikens. The irony was that my mom was supposed to be at work that day but when I asked her why she was home she gave me a vague answer. Dikens was running a bit late and I expected him to come, pick me up either in his sister’s car or an Uber, instead, he arrived in a giant black Suburban (his favorite car of course) with a chauffeur.
Needless to say, I was very surprised and confused. While we sat in our chauffeured ride for the night Dikens was pretty quiet. When I tried to speak to him he seemed pretty distracted. We arrived at a park in East Boston where we met our incredible photographer, Nana! Nana was so excited to shoot, full of smiles and compliments. We began shooting and posing, then Dikens encouraged me to take some solo photos which I thought was weird for a couples shoot, but I went along. After a few solo shots, the photographer pointed behind me and said, “I think your husband has something to say to you.” When I turned around the love of my life was on one knee.
I was so shocked, so happy and I was in total disbelief. I couldn’t stop nervously laughing. After a few bouts of “oh my gosh” Dikens with a huge grin on his face said “You will never walk alone again. You have my shoulders to lean on, you have my arms to call home, and my heart will be your shelter. Will you marry me?” It was the single most magical moment of my life.
