How We Met
Nik and I met during our senior year at Kent State University. We started college in the same year, both as out of state/country students. Nik came to Kent from the Republic of the Congo, Africa to study Economics and I came from Huntington, Indiana to study Fashion Design.
Kent is a small town and we both frequented the same places, but never met until our last semester. One night I walked by Nik in one of the bars and he stopped me. We talked for a few minutes and he asked for my phone number because he “really wanted to talk to me tomorrow”. I don’t usually give out my number, but for some reason I gave him my digits. He texted me the next day and asked if I wanted to join him for dinner. I agreed and he picked me up at my house. Nik was the perfect gentleman, opening my car door, the restaurant door, and really listening to me. We had a great conversation and I really enjoyed the date.
From that point on, Nik had my heart.
how they asked
Nik planned a special dinner for us on top of the Freedom Tower for what would be our third trip to the top. I met him there and a few of our friends were there, too. Nik assured me they were only there to see the view and wouldn’t be joining us for dinner. I thought nothing of it. We got to the top of the Tower and walked around for a minute when I decided to walk over to see the view and as I walked to one of the windows, my best friends turned around stopping me dead in my tracks. Standing there were my friends from all over the country, including my best friend since 2nd grade. As soon as I saw her, I knew what was happening. I threw my hands up to my face in disbelief as the girls ran over to hug me. Then they slowly backed away and Nik stepped up to me. He got down on one knee and said “Lisa Nicole, will you marry me?”. As I said a teary “yes” with a nod, Nik put the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen onto my finger. I could feel the hundreds of eyes on us while cheers and clapping erupted from our friends and the many other people visiting the Freedom Tower that day.
