Lindsay and Patrick
How We Met
Patrick and I both grew up in the same town in Northeast Ohio. We had some of the same friends and were casual acquaintances (at best) until January of 2011. I moved to Columbus and Patrick had moved there a few months prior. One random Saturday, I was bored and feeling much bolder than usual. I knew Patrick worked at a nearby Starbucks and decided on a whim to drive up to his store to see if he was working. He was, so I went in and pretended I had been “in the neighborhood shopping.” Little did I know, there was very little shopping in the area, and before I even made it back home, I’d gotten a call from my sister telling me that I needed to check my Facebook – Patrick posted on my page saying it was good to see me.
…Several months and Starbucks trips later, and with (sometimes) gentle encouragement from our friends, we made it official and became boyfriend and girlfriend in June of 2011.
how they asked
Our hometown has an old tradition known as “Santa on the Fire Truck.” Residents can arrange for the town’s fire truck to make a stop at their homes, with Santa aboard, bringing an early Christmas gift for the kids. Christmas has always been my favorite time of year, and Patrick and I grew up cherishing those memories with our families.
It was the week leading up to Christmas, and my siblings and I received a text from our mom, saying that she had a gift for us that she had to give us before Christmas. She asked us to come over that Friday for dinner and our gift. Patrick already had “plans” with two friends who were “in from out of town,” and wouldn’t be able to make it. When I arrived at my parents’ house, my mom was slightly disappointed and told us that UPS hadn’t arrived yet, but she was sure they’d be there by 8:00pm. Finally, my mom announced they were there, and asked us to go outside to get our gifts.
We walked down the driveway to the sound of sirens and a fire truck stopped right in front of the house – and out came Santa! It seemed like my mom, nostalgic as ever, had arranged for a Santa stop for her adult children. He gave a gift to my brother, and then to my sister, and asked if he’d forgotten anyone. My mom quickly let him know he’d forgotten Lindsay, and he went to the truck to look for my “gift.”
At that moment, the door opened, “Love Story” by Taylor Swift began playing, and Patrick wsa walking towards me. At that point, I went into shock. Patrick grabbed my hand, told me he loved me, wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, and got down on one knee to ask me to marry him. Even though I was stunned, I managed to nod my head and say, “yeah!” Everyone began cheering as I came to, and we went in to celebrate.
My first requirement for a proposal had been to be surprised – and it was far surpassed. Second was that Taylor Swift was involved, so it’s safe to say he nailed it on all accounts.
