Joel and I met in college while attending the University of California, Irvine. We met in 2008, but didn’t start dating until January 2010. After six years of dating, I thought that any family event was fair game for an engagement. Christmas came and went, and I realized I should probably just give him a break. When it’s the right time, he’ll propose. And then it happened…

On Wednesday, December 30, 2015, our neighbor came over to our house with a Christmas gift — a family photo session with Amy Wilton at one of my favorite places in Camden, Maine. At 4PM we went over to the Camden Amphitheater, and as I walked up the snowy steps I was surprised by what I saw — 150 glowing candles set-up among the trees.
Almost immediately I began crying because it was so beautiful. What I didn’t know then that I know now is my whole family was in on the secret. This is where Joel was going to propose. Needless to say, my family was a little nervous as to why I was in tears. Did I know? Did someone slip somewhere along the way?
After a few group shots, Amy suggested we take a few couples’ photos. My parents, brothers, and sister each took a photo or two with their significant other and then it was our turn. We took a few pictures, and as the flash of the last photo subsided, Joel looked at me and started to speak. I don’t remember what he said, all I know is that he got down on one knee and pulled out a ring. I’m not even sure I said “Yes!”, but I do know that I said “Put it on!!”
It was a magical day that I’ll remember forever!
