how they asked
It all started with Alex telling me he was going to get me breakfast. Little did I know he was actually just getting out of the house so my best friend, Bethany, could come over. I heard a knocking at the door and walked out to see Bethany holding an envelope and Alex’s sister, a photographer, taking pictures in the front yard. Inside the envelope was the first clue.
“Lindsay, today is finally the day that you have been waiting so long for. Unfortunately, you are going to need to wait a little bit longer. I have an entire day planned out for you. Enjoy the ride and I’ll see you at the finish line. Before reaching your next clue, you must change into something new. You are to go shopping for your dream dress. Love, Alex.”
After receiving the first clue, and taking a few minutes to collect myself, we spent the beginning of the morning shopping and going out for lunch. Bethany then gave me my second clue.
“Being picture ready doesn’t just stop at the outfit. You have to make sure your nails look good! You and Bethany have an appointment at the nail salon at 12:30pm. Don’t be late!”
When I walked in the door, I saw three of my closest friends and sorority sisters from college and couldn’t hold back the tears. I was able to calm down after a few minutes, but then walked in my best friend from high school and the water works came again. After we all finished with our nails, I received my third clue.
“Now that you have your outfit and nails done, it is time to complete the look so you can look perfect. You have an appointment at the salon at 2:15 for your hair and makeup. Enjoy!”
Being the emotional person I am, I of course started crying again. Doing as the clue said, we all packed up and made our way to the salon. After the pampering and a few glasses of champagne, we headed back to my house to let me change into the new dress. When we pulled up, the fourth clue was taped to my front door.
“Go inside and get read, the day is almost done! Before looking toward our future, we must go to our past. Go to my old house in Burkhaulter. There may be a surprise or two left in store for you!”
This clue held a big sentimental value, being that the house was where I first met Alex at Georgia Southern and where we began dating. As I walked up to the house I see a bag and clue sitting for me, then some of our best friends from college come around the side. After hugging them all, they told me I needed to take out what was in the bag. Of course I do and I get “iced,” an old college prank me and Alex used to play on each other. After finishing my drink, they let me read my fifth clue.
“Was that not the Ice that you were looking for? Sorry, that is still to come! While you are waiting, go enjoy a proper drink! You and everyone go to Gnat’s Landing for a drink.”
This was one of our favorite local places so after making our way there, we had time to talk and catch up with everyone. That was when I received my sixth and final clue.
“Hopefully you are still (somewhat) coherent, the time has finally come! When you get to the car, please have someone blindfold you with my tie. I will let you know when it is time for you to take it off. See you soon!”
After some friends blindfolded me and helped me into the car, we drove off. At this time I had no idea where I was being taken to and my mind ran through a million places, but I could not think of where we were going. After about 5 minutes the car stops and people help me out, still blindfolded. With a little assistance, I walk a few hundred feet, then feel Alex’s hand grab my arm and a wave of butterflies hit me.
We continued to walk a few more hundred feet until I heard our song, “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran playing over a loudspeaker and Alex takes off the blindfold. I open my eyes and see that we are standing in the middle of our college football field, Paulson Stadium.
He points up to the jumbo screen to a slideshow of different pictures of our relationship from vacations, to tailgating, to date nights and everything in between. I turn back he was down on one knee asking for my hand in marriage.
After saying yes, of course, I hear a roar of cheering and turn to see all of our friends and families sitting in the stands cheering us on. Never in a million years would I have thought Alex would be able to pull something off something so extravagant like but he truly made it a day I will never forget.
