How We Met
Tyler and I attended Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. Despite having many mutual friends, neighboring dorm buildings and even sharing a cafeteria, we didn’t meet until after I had moved to Indianapolis at the beginning of our junior year. We were set up by my roommate/his childhood friend during Homecoming Week. I was supposed to spend the weekend in the library studying for exams, but my roommate convinced me to drive to Bloomington with her. On the way, she came up with the brilliant idea of setting my up with her old neighbor. She called his sister Brittany (on speaker phone) to make sure Tyler would be at their house when we arrived. She was was very opposed to the idea and said he needed to take a break from dating for awhile. I remember my friend saying, “Don’t worry, this one is different.” No one told Tyler about the scheme, but the second I saw him we locked eyes and time completely stood still. We spent the weekend together and when I left on Sunday, I knew that my life had changed forever. He got my number and like a true gentleman waited an entire (agonizing) 24 hours to contact me. I did horribly on my exams that week, but it was worth every memory from that weekend.
(A few months later my mom took the picture above, and my grandma in California exclaimed, “I want to meet the tall one who looks at you with love in his eyes.”)
how they asked
Fast forward — we have two fur babies, steady jobs and a mortgage. After almost four years of making a life together, our engagement was just a matter of time. Tyler (always Mr. Patient) was sure he’d know when the time was right. I was sure I would see it coming. On 4th of July weekend, we had plans to have dinner at our house with his mom and his sister (who luckily changed her mind about us dating and has become like a sister to me). Tyler’s mom came over and we started making dinner. I called Tyler to see when he would be leaving work. He told me he would be home in about an hour. Moments later, our garage door opened. I looked up to see Tyler walking into the house with roses. Confused, I asked why he had flowers. Then I realized he wasn’t in his work clothes. Beyond confused, I watched as he took a few steps towards me and dropped to one knee!
Instead of going to work, Tyler and Brittany had spent the day ring shopping (she had made the trip up just for that reason…the 4th was just a convenient excuse!). He had expected to be able to pick the ring a few days later, but they ended up having it ready that evening. Tyler said the moment he saw the ring, he knew he couldn’t wait any longer. He was so excited he could barely get the words out, and I was so shocked that I couldn’t either! The spontaneity of the moment and the look of pure joy on his face was beyond my wildest dreams how he would ask me to spend my life with him. Then he opened the box and I was beyond speechless!
To top off the perfect proposal, his sister walked in the door behind him and got a video of the whole thing.
