Lieren and Dillon

How We Met

I remember 8th grade talking with my friends at a volleyball tournament about all of the popular older boys that we would see in high school the following year. There were five boys in particular, with Dillon being one of them. They were the highlight of our discussion, never imagining that they would care to know our names, let alone date one of us. The first day of high school came and lucky for my best friend and me, Dillon shared the same lunch period. Every time he walked by, my friend and I would whisper and basically fangirl to each other about him. Little did I know, he was going around asking his friends who I was to try and learn my name.

The night we first met I was beyond nervous, shaking as I got ready. My best friend’s brother invited her and me to hang out with Dillon and him. Being a terrible flirt and insanely shy, I barely said a word to him that night despite his efforts to try and talk to me. Instead every time he looked away from my friend and I would turn to each other and ask if each other if we were actually hanging out with THE Dillon Chavez! That’s the night I officially decided that Dillon had to have been my dream guy. After swimming I finally got home only to find a Facebook message of, “Hey!;)” from Dillon. My life was made right then and there. Literally shaking with my heart beating out my chest I responded back with another “Hey!” minus the winky face😉I called all of my friends to share the news, each one being as shocked as me. What would Dillon want with a nerdy 14-year-old girl who had never had a boyfriend before? As the days went on, our Facebook messaging moved to texting which then moved to dates. We started dating September 22, 2011, exactly seven and a half years from the day he proposed.

How They Asked

Dillon and I had been talking about getting married since we were in high school. With my graduate school ending in a year, I knew a proposal would be just around the corner. Over and over I told him there was no way he was going to surprise me, but boy was I WRONG!!

Back up three weeks from the day he proposed. I received an award from my graduate program and my parents couldn’t make it to the ceremony, so they said that they would take me to dinner to celebrate. Living three hours away from my hometown (where Dillon lives), my parents made reservations on the day they were flying into the airport near me from another trip.

They met me at my apartment and we casually held a conversation talking about anything and everything, including when Dillon might propose! Little did I know, I was going to be engaged a few hours later! The thought of being proposed to that day didn’t cross my mind considering it was a Monday and I thought Dillon would be working in our hometown. I’m not sure how they did it, but my parents played it cool and didn’t give anything away.

It was time to go to dinner and my dad put me in charge of giving directions on how to get there (he had already been there a couple of hours earlier). When we arrived at the restaurant, my mom and I were in awe of the landscaping. Colorful spring flowers covered the entire property with soft music playing in the background. My dad checked to see if our reservation was ready (there was never a reservation), and told us we had to wait 15 minutes. We decided to walk around the resort that the restaurant was at to waste time until our table was ready.

After about 15 minutes of walking around and gazing at all the flowers, I mentioned to my parents that our table was probably ready. As I was mentioning this, I looked up and thought I saw someone who looked like Dillon. I stared harder, with 10 full seconds going by until I realized it was him. My heart fell into my stomach and my legs started shaking. Beyond shocked, I realized exactly why he was there. I walked up to him, both of us smiling so hard with tears already forming. He grabbed both my hands, said a speech that I have no memory of, and got down on a knee.

Through laughter and tears, I looked down to see my dream ring upside down in its box. I quickly fixed it, said “YES!!” and he pulled the ring out and slid it on my finger. After that we heard cheering and turned around, only to find my best friend and all of our family there to surprise us.

Easily the best day of my life and happened to be our 7.5 year anniversary!❤️ Growing up together has been better than I could imagine, I can’t imagine how sweet growing old together will be!”
