How We Met
Vinny and I’s first date, is not what you would call the ideal first date but makes a funny story and was just the spark of an amazing chemistry between us. Vinny and I had made plans to go on our first date at a restaurant close to both of our offices so we could meet for dinner/drinks after work. To my surprise, when I arrived at the agreed upon restaurant, the building was burned down. I tried calling Vinny to ask him if I had the right place and my call went straight to voicemail. You can imagine my confusion and concern as I was starting to think that I was being stood up. Finally, I got a call from Vinny in a panic as he was also just realizing that the restaurant was burned down.
We agreed to meet at a restaurant down the road, hopefully we would have had better luck. No such luck though. We got to the table and both took one look at the menu, and were in awe of the absurd prices. Vinny tried to be a good guy and ignore it but I could tell he was a bit anxious about the prices. I am not a high maintenance kind of girl. I am happy with a burger and beer so I suggested going to the TGI Fridays down the road. I could see how relieved he was so we got up and left. We ended up having a great night at TGI Fridays and ended up staying until they closed. Not your conventional idea of a first date but one I will always remember as my last first date. These last almost 5 years with Vinny has felt like a lifetime already and we have built an incredible life together so far, but this is only the beginning.
How They Asked
Our proposal wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support and love from both of our families. Vinny and I come from big and loud Italian families that welcomed each of us like their own. The proposal planning began months ago when Vinny went to my Mom, my brothers and my sister individually to ask for their permission to marry me. My father is not a part of my life but Vinny knew how important it was to get the permission from the rest of my family. Vinny and I had been planning a trip to Italy, which has been on our bucket list since we started dating over 4 years ago. Vinny’s parents decided to join the trip with us since Vinny’s father was born and grew up in Italy. I had a feeling that he was going to propose when we were in Italy, because I mean, it’s the most romantic country in the world right?! When it didn’t happen in Italy, although I was a little disappointed, I couldn’t have asked for a more special night than our engagement night. It has been a tradition of my entire family to go the same restaurant in Little Italy in NYC on Christmas Eve every year, Puglia. Vinny invited his family to join my families’ tradition and come with us this year on Christmas Eve. In front of the whole restaurant and both of our families, he gave a very heartfelt speech about how important it was that both of our families were with us tonight and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I have never been more surprised and it was a moment I will never forget. It meant the world to us that our families got to be a part of this special moment in our lives because as any Italian knows, family comes first. We are hoping to continue this tradition with both of our families on Christmas Eve every year.
