How We Met
Derek and I met on OkCupid. I never thought I would be the kind of person to date someone I met online. It had always been easy to meet new people in college but after graduation I began working making it harder to find time to get out. One afternoon I was talking with a friend, she suggested I try the online thing because that is how she met her boyfriend and even if it doesn’t work out I would “get some free drinks”. So I gave it a try and after a while of no luck I was ready to give up.
Then one morning I received a message from Derek. I could tell he was a sweet, genuine guy and we clicked, immediately. So a few days later we met in person for a first date. We laughed and talked for hours, so much so that we annoyed our waitress who was trying to go home for the night. After our date I knew that I wanted to see him again. We continued texting later that night and by the next evening we were having our second date! It didn’t take long for us to start spending every spare moment we had together and soon we became official.
how they asked
One of our favorite cities to visit is Charleston, SC, so when Derek suggested we take a long weekend vacation it was easy to decide where to go. We booked our room and started planning tours for us to go on in between swimming at the beach and wandering through the city. Derek told me that he had planned for us to have dinner on a sailboat yacht on Friday evening. I had my suspicions that this could be it, but I had thought that before and was wrong so I didn’t want to get my hopes up. Besides, I was just so excited to see the city from the water at sunset.
The day came for us to set sail when a huge thunderstorm came through. If Derek was nervous about the weather, he didn’t show it. The storm ended later that morning and the rest of the day was absolutely beautiful.
We arrived at the marina and started to look for our boat, The Fate. After a little bit of confusion and much walking around we finally found it. Just like that we were off sailing in the harbor. It was like something out of a movie watching the city scenery, even dolphins began jumping out of the water around us. When we got close to the Ravenel Bridge(the most famous bridge in Charleston), the captain suggested we take some pictures at the front of the boat.
We had begun to take a couple of photos when Derek turned to face me and grabbed my hands. He was telling me how much he loved me and how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. At this point I knew exactly what was happening.
I don’t remember all the words he said after he got down on one knee but I do remember lots of happy screams(coming from me) and he pulled out the most beautiful ring as he asked me to be his wife.
I immediately, and repeatedly, yelled YES! We hugged, kissed, and drank champagne as the captain captured the special moments for us.
Then we continued to sail around the harbor as the sun began to set. I couldn’t have asked for a better proposal or a better fiance.
The past two years have been the most amazing years of my life, I have found my best friend, partner to travel the world with and the love of my life!
