How We Met

Once upon a time, a girl met a guy at a bar… and they lived happily ever after.

About four years ago, I got a call from my friend Jade. She had planned a birthday party for a well known local photographer and the proceeds raised were going to help the homeless in Hawaii. Her raffle girls had bailed last minute and she needed someone to sell raffle tickets. I told her I’d be there.

On the night of the party, a very tall, handsome, well-dressed man was hanging out at the bar. I made my rounds around the room several times and even talked him into a few rounds of tickets. I went back to my friend Jade and I was like “tell me I should ask for his number!” So after a drink and a great pep talk, I walked up to him and said: “Hi, are you seeing anyone?”

Completely taken aback, he stared at me and then said “No.”

“Great, do you want my phone number?” I replied.

I don’t remember exactly what he said to that, but he took out his phone. I took it out of his hand, punched my phone number in, and called myself (so my number would save).

“I’m Lauren.”

“Cool, I gotta go. My friends are leaving.” And I literally turned around and walked out of the club.

He called me a couple days later and the rest is history.

how they asked

In September, we went on a 5-week vacation in Europe. Everyone was telling me that Kimo was going to propose. And I knew he wasn’t. We had been told by all of our well-traveled friends to leave all the flashy jewelry at home so we wouldn’t make ourselves targets for pick-pockets. We had already picked out my engagement ring about a year ago and I knew Kimo wasn’t crazy enough to travel abroad with it.

Being the planner that I am, I had booked a 90-minute photo shoot in Venice, Italy with Flytographer 2 months before our trip. I thought it was the perfect opportunity to take some really memorable photos for our Christmas card and frame a few prints in our new house.

Little did I know, a week before we were leaving for Europe Kimo thought it would be a brilliant idea to piggyback off my photoshoot and propose. I wouldn’t see it coming.

Instead of walking to the photoshoot, as planned, Kimo took me in the opposite direction and got us a water taxi which we took down the Grand Canal to Punta Della Dogana where we were meeting our photographer, Vito.

After shooting at Punta Della Dogana, we walked into a sleepy little neighborhood and proceeded to shoot there on all the pretty side streets for an hour or so. Kimo kept checking his phone for the time and asked me if we were going to any notable, famous sites. Not thinking anything of it, I told no.

Around the hour mark, the photographer told us we were going to head to the Academia Bridge. On our walk there we took a few more photos.

After we had taken a few photos on the bridge, Vito told us that our session was done. Kimo turned to Vito and asked him if he could take a couple more. He thought he had blinked in the last one. At this point, I was looking at Kimo like he has four heads. (He doesn’t really like taking photos.) While he was still insisting that Vito take more photos, I turn to look at the photographer to exchange a questioning look. I turn back to tell Kimo that we’re fine and don’t need more photos and I see him on his knee with a ring in his hand.

I was so shocked. The first thing that ran through my head was: This is a joke. I’ve definitely been punked…

Then I asked him “Is this for real?”

Grinning from ear-to-ear, he told me that it was.

I literally burst into tears and put my hand out. I couldn’t speak. I just ugly cried. The people on the bridge erupted into applause. I vaguely heard the camera snapping away.

Once I’d managed to compose myself, our photographer came and congratulated us. We said our goodbyes and walked to dinner where Kimo had made reservations for us. I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect proposal.

And Kimo, being Kimo, proposed with a “travel ring”.

Special Thanks
