How We Met
Met at a marketing agency and reconnected years later via mutual friends.
how they asked
“Once in your life
I’ve got a question for you…”
– Old 97’s, “Question”
It was sunset on August 11, 2017 in Montmatre, Paris, near the Sacre Couer Cathedral. We walked up the hill there, among the hundreds of people who gathered each night to enjoy the view of Paris’ lights spread out in the distance.
We’d just finished a dinner nearby and were taking a nice walk to relax a bit before heading back. Or, at least, that was the cover story…
Many months earlier, Lauren had casually mentioned that a song playing on the radio, the beautiful Old 97’s song “Question,” was one of her favorites. The lyrics told a story about a couple walking to a park, the man nervous, taking her by the hand and asking her a once in a lifetime question…

And it all worked out (though I, like the man from the lyrics, was so nervous…;) On cue, they strolled up to us as if randomly. Lauren look surprised as I asked Severine “Do you happen to know Lauren’s favorite song?” Lauren looked even more surprised when a smiling Severine responded with “Of course I do…” and then, with the guitarist accompanying, started to sing.
Someday somebody’s gonna ask you
A question that
You should say “yes” to
Once in your life
I’ve got a question for you
As Lauren began to realize what was happening, we both just smiled with joy and held each other as the crowd around us started to stare, then cheer.
And then, when the song was over, I got down on bended knee, ring in hand, and asked her to marry me. She said “Oui. Yes. Forever. ” And the next chapters in our lives, together and with all of you, our friends and family, began…
