How We Met

Jake and I met in the first week of classes in law school in September of 2014. We were in the same section at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. Technically, our first conversation was on Tinder, though we each knew who the other was when we matched. I recognized him as the super cute guy who sat in the front row and said a smart thing once in Torts.

My mom had given me one piece of advice when I headed off to law school – don’t date anyone, focus on classes—just for the first semester. But Jake was very persistent, and he bribed me with class notes and case briefs. We started hanging out almost every day. We would sit around, talk, and read for class or study. Once, after a particularly rough class, Jake took me for ice cream.

I guess I didn’t try that hard not to date my first semester since a couple weeks after our first ‘official’ date, I invited him to fly to California with me to go to a college friend’s wedding. Before our trip, Jake saved my mom’s number as “Future Mother-In-Law” on his phone. I thought he was crazy! But also I secretly hoped he might be right. All of our friends told us that it was crazy to date someone else in law school, let alone someone in the same section. They all talked about how awkward it would be when we broke up. But in fact, the opposite was true. We were each other’s support system, and being together made law school easier, not harder. The past three years, Jake has been my rock, and we have gone through some pretty rough storms together! Literally – he moved to Houston, Texas, for me, just in time for his car to get flooded during Hurricane Harvey. He has been by my side through every late study night, through a surgery and scary diagnosis, and everything in between. Together we have traveled the world, led bible studies and learned more about Jesus, and become obsessed with our cats.

how they asked

In October 2015, he told his best friend Rahul how he would propose to me. I checked with Rahul– it’s legit. Jake had this whole idea for two years, and it came together perfectly on Saturday, October 28, 2017. Jake knew that my favorite holiday is Halloween, and that I am completely obsessed with Cinderella. We saw the 2015 version in theaters on my birthday, and we have eaten dinner at Cinderella’s castle in Disney World – where he saw me essentially become at 5-year-old girl enamored by the all of the shiny princess things. He even commented after that dinner that it would have been “pretty cool to have proposed there, huh?” But he had something even better planned.

Jake has always been the type to give incredibly personal and special gifts, so I should not be surprised that he proposed in the most amazing way. A few weeks before Halloween this year, Jake told me that his law firm had an annual Halloween costume party and asked if we should go as Cinderella and Prince Charming. I was ALL ABOUT THAT, which is why I did not find it suspicious that he never told me where the party was, or that he asked for my measurements and had a Cinderella dress made on Etsy. The dress almost did not make it in time – and Jake was so stressed! I reminded him that it was just a party, that I could just find something for a last minute costume. Boy am I glad that my dress finally got here just a few days before the “party” on Saturday!!

On the way to the “party,” I grilled Jake about all of the associates and partners at his firm. I needed to know who was who, after all. As we left the house, he mentioned that the party was at Hermann Park. I thought it was a rather strange and extravagant venue, but I was dressed as Cinderella so I didn’t really mind what we did or where!

We got there early, so he suggested we walk around the Japanese Garden and enjoy the scenery before we had to walk to the party. We walked over to a beautiful little pond and stopped to reflect. Jake had his arm around me and it was so beautiful! He began talking about all that we have been through together, three years of law school, the bar exam, even a life-changing tumor and surgery. Although it was sweet, I was a little confused since Jake is a very private person and there were lots of people in the park. As it was a conversation, I kept talking back to him and joking around. At one point, a little boy came up to me to say hi because I was dressed as Cinderella!

Finally I quit interrupting and soaked in everything that Jake was saying to me. Tears began to well in my eyes as I heard the most amazing man tell me that I was his constant source of strength, his best friend, and finally, “I respect you more than I could ever form into words. I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, so… I have something to ask you.” Then he got down on one knee and opened a beautiful little floral box with a Cinderella shoe on top. Even the ring box matched the theme. He asked, “Will you marry me?” I sobbed and shook my head yes (I later told him yes, to be extra sure that he understood!). He stood up, placed the ring of my dreams on my finger, and we kissed and cried. I remember thinking that I wished I was a prettier crier, as he introduced me to the photographer he had arranged to capture the moment. My next words were, “Wait, there’s no party?!” and he just laughed at me. My Prince and I had a glorious hour in the park to take pictures, and it felt like we were on a cloud the entire time. Children kept asking us if we were really Cinderella & Prince Charming. I have never felt more like a princess than after agreeing to be Jake’s wife!

My face hurt from smiling and I felt like my heart could just burst, and then Jake said the surprises weren’t over yet! He blindfolded me and drove me somewhere. I was nervous about blending in at a restaurant, since I was in a giant Cinderella costume. But then my blindfold came off and my dad opened his front door, and said, “Come on in, the Astros are playing!” I was thinking, are you kidding me? I just got engaged – let’s celebrate that, not watch the Astros! I came in, and my whole family was there – IN COSTUME! We concluded the best fairytale day surrounded by family, and then came home to our cats – neither of whom were impressed by my ring.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that I would get such a romantic, thoughtful, sneaky, and perfect proposal. I’ve known all along that he was my prince, but now I know for sure that the shoe fits!
