How We Met: My college roommate, Laura, who quickly became my best friend, transferred to another college after freshman year. We didn’t let distance keep us apart. After many visits to see Laura, I met a lot of new friends through her. There was one in particular who stood out to me, Dan. He was always the one making everyone laugh and being goofy. I couldn’t get my mind off of him. I kept seeing him when I was visiting Laura. After conversation sparked a few times and flirting texting began, Dan offered to come visit me and take me out for the night. We went on many dates, I knew there was something special with him. Spring was fast approaching and Dan was suddenly being distance. He finally told me that he had enlisted in the Navy. My heart sank. I was crushed. I was so hurt I didn’t even go to his going away party. Before I knew it, he was gone, devoted to boot camp in another state. Fast forward to the holidays, it was a tradition for Laura and I to celebrate New Year’s Eve together. We were at a house party and Dan randomly texted me that he was home. Immediately, I felt the butterflies, hoping I would see him. Before I knew it, he was at the front door. I threw myself into his arms and we kissed for what felt like forever. I knew he was the man I was going to marry. My feelings were completely unreal. The next morning, I dropped him off at his parents’ house (where he was staying while home from the Navy). As I pulled out of the driveway, I just cried. Cried for miles, driving away from my love again. We were completely in love. He went back to his Navy station in Chicago and left me in New York. Before I knew it, he had bought me a plane ticket to come out to Chicago to spend a weekend with him. We spent many magical weekends in Chicago, falling in love every time. After many trips to Chicago and then his new station of Virginia Beach, I decided it was time for me to move to him. About two years ago, I made the move to Virginia and haven’t regretted a moment. This past November, he came back from a 9 month over seas deployment. Throughout the lonely 9 months, I knew if we could make it through that, we could make it through anything. He is my best friend and has made me an amazing person!
how they asked: Dan surprised me with a weekend away in New York City this past February. He wanted me to get away, somewhere close to home. He planned an entire weekend of fun times with just the two of us. We explored the city on Friday and during the day on Saturday. He was insistent on going to Central Park early evening on Saturday. I was confused as to why this was his one concrete plan. We spent the day on Saturday at the 9/11 museum, very emotional time. We came out of the museum to a snow storm. Even with a snow storm, he was still insistent on going on a walk during Central Park then going out to a nice dinner after. We took a cab to Central Park and began our walk through the snow through the park. We stopped at Bethesda Fountain when he took my hands and began telling me about how much he loved me. Before I knew it, he was down on one knee and I completely blacked out with excitement. It was beautiful, especially with the snow falling. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with him!
