How We Met
Neither of us were looking for love when we met.
In April of 2015, a mutual friend was coming back to Westchester county NY to visit her family and catch up with friends for the weekend. I had know Caryn from undergrad and she messaged me about grabbing drinks Friday night. She asked if I wouldn’t mind if she invited another friend to join us- she was only in town for the weekend and was trying to catch up with as many people as possible. She then sent a picture of said friend with a gorgeous smile and laughing eyes adding that he was a great guy, she knew him from volunteering in high school, and that he told funny stories. I responded that I was most excited to see her and YES PLEASE BRING THAT BEAUTIFUL MAN.
Meanwhile, she was messaging Chris something similar: Would you like to come meet my friend and I for drinks? Here’s her picture. She’s fun, smart, and new to the area, etc.
So we meet over mojitos at Don Coqui in White Plains and spent a couple hours talking, laughing, and genuinely enjoying each other’s company. After what seemed like no time at all, Caryn yawned, stretched and declared she was tired and going home. She thanked us for meeting up with her and coyly wished us a good rest of the night then left us to our own devices.
The following Friday, exactly one week later, we went on our first date.
how they asked
I had been traveling by myself, on sabbatical, for a little over a month when Chris and I traveled to Iceland with my best friend, Megan. It was the first time we had been apart this long since 2 years prior when dating long distance before Chris moved to San Antonio.
We spent 4 days exploring the rugged, natural beauty of Iceland and all its wonders, stunned at the unreal vistas and once-in-a-lifetime experiences around every corner.
On our last full day in Iceland, we wandered out of our AirBnB to explore the capital city Reykjavik. Unbeknownst to me, Chris and Megan were setting out to pick the perfect proposal spot on the fly. Chris had the ring in his pocket and they had agreed to signal when they found the ideal location. Just 2 blocks into the search, we were walking up a quiet, tree-lined path leading up to the back side of Hallgrimskirkja Church when Megan says “Chris, this is a nice place for a picture. Why don’t you put down your bags and I’ll take it.” It was the signal.
Chris put his arm around me for the picture (if you look closely, he is holding the open ring box over my right shoulder and I am clueless) while Megan is snapping away. He then drops to one knee and I am flooded with emotion as he asks me to marry him. I got to say yes to spending the rest of my life with the man of my dreams with my best friend by my side. I couldn’t image a more perfect moment.
