How We Met
Our journey is a long one :)
Brandon and I met through family when we were in middle school. His family actually first met my aunt & uncle when they lived in Pennsylvania a few years earlier – they became part of our family right away. We didn’t meet, however, until his family moved to Atlanta. My aunt and uncle told his family that they had relatives in Atlanta and connected us.
Our immediate families spent a lot of time together, doing boat days on the lake and attending parties/family functions together. In a broader sense, our families also started to merge! We all realized how similar both of our families were. The Chambers and the Daltons/Prices are loud, fun-loving groups so there was an instant connection. Across the country, we all attended the same weddings, parties, funerals, etc.
But, Brandon and I remained just friends. We had crushes on each other in the beginning but were both too nervous/young to act on it :) There may or may not have been a kiss at his high school graduation but we never talked about it until a few years later when he came to visit his sister in DC. His sister and I were roommates at the time and when he came to visit, there was a spark for sure. We both reconnected at his older sister’s wedding a few weeks later and dated briefly (a combination of long-distance and the wrong timing).
Fast forward to 2015. I was back in Atlanta. We were both coming out of relationships and just connected as friends. We started dating a few months later and it stuck :)
How They Asked
Brandon proposed on my birthday but it was actually not his original plan :) We were supposed to be in Jamaica on my birthday for a family trip but it got canceled last minute due to COVID-19. He then made a series of other plans throughout the week but each one got cancelled due to new limitations popping up every day like restaurants closing and social distancing. The final plan (Plan F I believe it was) came into place the morning of the actual proposal!
He told me the morning of my birthday that we had dinner reservations at 6pm that night. I was anxious all day because I knew we weren’t supposed to be going to public places but I didn’t want to complain so I just kept my fingers crossed that dinner was actually going to be at home! Around 4:00pm, my best friend called me and said she needed to vent. We took a walk around my neighborhood and, unbeknownst to me, Brandon was using this time to set up for phase 1 of the night.
When I got home from my walk, there were rose petals sprinkled throughout the house leading up to our bedroom. On the bed were three white dresses and a bottle of champagne – he told me to pick a dress for that night’s dinner! We were actually supposed to be wearing all white in Jamaica on this night for family pictures so I thought this was such a cute way to incorporate our original plans into my birthday surprise. I still had no idea a proposal was coming.
After we got dressed, he blindfolded me and escorted me to the car where we drove to the “restaurant”. Still – no idea! When we got to our location, he took off the blindfold and I was totally surprised by the setup. It was beautiful! Candles and piano music playing. A bistro table set up with a full course meal and wine. Balloons and flowers. It was magical. I had no idea that our moms had set that up and were actually waiting next door at the neighbor’s house to surprise me!
After we wrapped up the most intimate dinner (he served pasta which is my absolute favorite), a man walked up the stairs with roses in hand and started singing a capella. I kid you not – I still had no idea a proposal was coming. This entire time, I thought Brandon just wanted to make my birthday special since we couldn’t celebrate with friends or in Jamaica.
As soon as the singer began to wrap up the most beautiful song, I see Brandon’s mom and my parents come around the corner. I’m pretty sure I screamed but seriously still had no clue. I turn back around and Brandon drops to one knee and then I completely lost it. I was overcome with emotion and just couldn’t even believe it was happening.
Although this wasn’t his original plan or even his 2nd or 3rd, it was PERFECT in my eyes. It was the way it was meant to be and night we both will never forget!
