Lauren and Adam
How We Met: I had just moved to Ottawa a few months earlier to start my new career as a communications advisor to a federal Cabinet Minister. Since I was new to the area and didn’t know anyone, I was asked by my boss one evening to attend a communications staffer social to meet some new colleagues in my field. At the social I was seated directly across from Adam. We hit it off instantly.
He was cracking jokes and his personality was both charming and infectious. Every time he saw my glass empty he would ask me if I wanted to go to another restaurant to get to know each other one on one. We didn’t end up going to another spot that night, however he asked me out to dinner the very next evening. The rest is history. Everyone always says- you will find your match when you are least expecting it and in our case, it was true.
how they asked: After a day of sightseeing in such a picturesque place, we poured ourselves a drink and decided to walk the beach in front of the cottage we had rented on the remote Canadian island, les Iles de la Madeleine. As we walked, Adam began a long story about his extended family that involved cousins, aunt, uncles and grandparents.
When we got back to our cottage he made us new drinks and we sat outside for awhile watching the calm Atlantic Ocean and continuing our conversation as we watched the sun set. Then he abruptly said “I’m telling you all of this because I want you to be part of my family.” I didn’t think much of it since we were already in a serious relationship so I simply said “of course I’m part of your family.” He then came closer to me and said “No, I want to make it official.”
He got real close to me, pulled a small mahogany box out of his jacket, got down on one knee and asked. I had no idea it was coming, nor did I know he had asked for my parents blessing two days earlier. We then called our parents and close family and then went to dinner at a fancy restaurant nearby. He had made the reservation weeks earlier…I had always known he was the one for me but had no idea this romantic proposal was coming.
