Laura and Roger

How We Met

Roger and I have known each other for a long time –  we first met in Senior Kindergarten! We went to the same school together up until Grade 3, and throughout those years, we spent most of them in the same classroom! I remember Roger from those days – he was a friend to everyone; always cracking jokes and making people smile. We parted ways in Grade 4, when I went to a school closer to home. Throughout the rest of elementary and high school, we went our separate ways, but throughout the years I would think about him often, wondering how he was doing (there was no Facebook, and social media wasn’t as popular as it is now, so finding out how someone was doing was pretty much through word of mouth and/or if you had mutual friends).

So the years went on, and I had begun University. It was the beginning of my 3rd year, and a friend of mine and I were walking down one of the hallways at school, when all of a sudden I heard someone calling my name. I looked up and it was Roger! He hadn’t changed a bit since I last saw him in Grade 3 (except he got taller and grew facial hair lol). We spoke for a few minutes, and I was a bit in shock by the blast from the past. We parted ways (I had to go to class) but we exchanged numbers, and a few minutes after I got a text from him saying how nice it was to see me! I was so happy to have reunited with him!

We stayed friends for a few months, and kept in touch. We would hang out at school before or after our classes. Sometimes we would be on the phone for hours just chatting about anything that came to mind. Then on January 27, 2009, he took me out for dinner at a beautiful little restaurant in downtown Toronto, and that night he asked me to be his girlfriend! It was a beautiful moment. We have been happily dating ever since!

The picture shown is of Roger and me in December 2008. We were not officially dating yet, but we both love Christmas time, and this is one of the first pictures taken of us!

how they asked

Roger’s proposal was a complete surprise (as most of them are!)

Roger and I both love Christmas time, and one place I have a deep love for is New York City. I’ve gone many times with my family, as well Roger and I went on a trip there in 2011. I’ve always wanted to see NYC at Christmas time – the Rockefeller tree, skating in Central Park, and of course watching the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular! NYC is a magical city, and seeing it at Christmas time is watching it truly come alive. Roger shared the same excitement with me (his is slightly more subtle than mine lol) so this past December, we planned a trip to New York City to experience all the special moments that come from such a beautiful place.

On our first day in New York, we headed over to Central Park. I was excited to show Roger some of the monuments that I have seen before, but we didn’t get to explore when we went a few years ago. Little did I know, he was planning a surprise of his own!

We walked around Central Park for some time, enjoying the beauty of it. With the crisp air and the carriage rides, we were really beginning to get into the Christmas spirit! While sitting at the Bethesda Fountain, Roger asked if I wanted to take a walk over to where the skating rink was. I said sure, so we began our walk over there. We watched all the happy families and couples skating around, enjoying themselves. As we were standing there, Roger asked if I wanted to walk over to the Gapstow Bridge (I didn’t know the name at the time, but we had taken photos there on our previous trip, so he asked if I wanted to go there to see it again).

We walked over there and while standing right next to the water that goes under the bridge, I asked if he wanted to take a selfie. He said sure, so we did. After I took the picture, Roger turned to me, and told me he needed to tell me something. He then said a beautiful speech (all memorized) about how he feels about me. After he said his beautiful words, he said he needed to ask me a question. At that moment, he got down on one knee, took out the most gorgeous ring and said, “Laura, will you marry me?” I was in complete shock and awe! I was so happy! I was crying so much!

I said yes (of course!!!) and gave him a hug. We had a crowd cheering around us – it was a moment I will truly never forget.

While I began to collect myself after crying from excitement and pure joy, he pointed to a woman holding a camera and said “do you see her? She has been taking our photos this entire time. We are going to have a 30 minute photo shoot right now!” I was in disbelief! He had hired a photographer to take photos of the engagement, and to have a photo session right after! I was surprised, but so happy that Roger hired her. They were moments that were so special to me, and now I can look at them whenever I want and relive the joyous moment all over again.

I am so excited to be marrying Roger. He is truly the love of my life. I am so lucky and blessed to be loved by him. Thank you Roger for making me the happiest woman!
