How We Met
It was the 1st week of high school, freshman year. I remember I was talking to some of my girlfriends before our 7th period class started when I heard a guy laughing loudly. I turned around and saw him walk in with one of his friend. I’m not a big fan of cliches and up until that point I thought love at first sight was a little crazy, but I clearly remember my first thought when I saw him was “Wow, He’s cute. That’s gonna be my boyfriend.” I don’t know how, but I just knew. So of course I had to find out who he was. Being that I was too nervous to introduce myself I just asked around and found out his name was Kevin and that he was on the football team and a freshman as well. After I got that information I did absolutely nothing. I remember trying to find the best way to introduce myself without being awkward, but every time I just chickened out. So I just let it go and accepted he didn’t notice me.
Fast forward a few months later, it was the last day of school before thanksgiving break and I was waiting for my ride. I heard someone call my name, I turn around and there was Kevin. I don’t remember much of our conversation, but I do remember him asking if I had planned to go to the upcoming winter dance, but before I had a chance to answer my ride arrived! Luckily, I had enough time to give him my number before I ran off. A few days later we were back at school and this time we hung out after school to talk he asked if I had a date to the dance again, when I told him no he asked if could take me and the rest is history.
We dated all through high school and then college came and we went to different schools so we decided to remain friends. Of course it wasn’t that easy. Luckily we had the same best friend so I always had a way of knowing how he was doing. So I guess you could say he was always in the back of my mind. Then a few years back we reconnected while hanging out with friends and everyone kept telling us we were a cute couple. After having to say repeatedly we were just friends it kind of just hit us that our feelings hadn’t changed. It took a while, but eventually we decided to try again and we haven’t looked back.
how they asked
Back in July we spontaneously booked a trip to Europe for his birthday. We’d been talking about going to Germany so I could meet the rest of his family. Then he suggested we spend a few days in Paris as well since he knew I was nervous about meeting his family. Of course I said yes, who would turn down Paris? So for the next few months I looked forward to our trip, researching things to do and see. The week before we left he said he had forgotten he had made dinner reservations for the night before our trip, but he wouldn’t tell me where. All he told me is to dress up and be ready by a certain time. Being so focused on the trip I didn’t think much of it. He took me to this restaurant in San Francisco that had the most amazing view of the Bay Bridge where we had an amazing dinner. I remember thinking during dinner it was the best date of my life. We both work a lot so it was great to have that time to talk and just be excited for our trip. I even made a joke about how we wouldn’t be getting engaged for a couple of years. Oops! After dinner we decided to go for a walk along the Embarcadero and take in the view. He even offered to take a picture of me with the view. So he was trying to take a picture of me, but he kept saying something wasn’t right. He came over and said something was wrong with the photo. Then he took at my hand, looked at the promise ring he had given me for my birthday and took it off while saying, “I think this is whats wrong. Yeah, this isn’t right.” The next thing I know he’s reaching into his jacket, getting down on one knee and saying he couldn’t imagine a life without me and asking me to marry him. It felt like everything froze, but I’ll never forget the look on his face when he asked and I realized this was for real. Then I couldn’t say yes fast enough.
Later I found out he’d be planning this pretty much since we booked the trip. Knowing me as well as he did he knew I wouldn’t want to be asked in Paris. He also banked on me being so distracted by vacation I wouldn’t notice he was acting weird. He asked me in my favorite city in the world, right before our trip so we’d have more to celebrate. We decided to keep our engagement a secret until we got back so we could enjoy our trip so we wouldn’t be overwhelmed on vacation. We even joked about just getting married on vacation to surprise everyone. We didn’t, but we did have photos taken to celebrate and honestly just having those weeks just to ourselves made it even better. I couldn’t asked for a more perfect proposal, and can’t wait to see what surprises lie ahead for us.
