How We Met
Jon and I met in December of 2015 through, ironically enough, my little brother. Jon and my brother are in college together, and they became friends during their first year. My brother invited me and Jon to go to a concert together with him in Portland, but we didn’t know each other yet. We each had different ideas about who the other would be – I thought Jon would be a 19-year-old like my brother, and he thought that I was going to be in my 30s. Jon literally showed up on my doorstep and introduced himself, and I think we were both caught off guard! We really hit it off that night – we found out that we have a ton in common, we both love Jesus, and we just got along really well. The next day, Jon messaged me and we started talking. A week later, we had our first date. Jon *officially* asked me out on Christmas, and we shared our first kiss on New Year’s Eve. The rest is history! We knew that we had each found someone special in one another, and I’m so thankful to my brother for inadvertently bringing us together!
how they asked
Jon and I picked out my ring together several months ago, and I anticipated that he would propose during the summer. In the weeks leading up to the proposal, he had been hinting that it was going to happen on a big vacation that we were taking at the end of the summer. However, he totally surprised me! On August 21, Jon asked me to come meet him on the Oregon Coast. I thought he was crazy, as that was the day of the total solar eclipse, and I was anticipating super heavy traffic! I also was suspicious of his intentions, as he had hinted even more that the proposal might be happening. However, there was very little traffic, so I met him at our favorite place on the coast, Winema Christian Camp. Winema holds a lot of sentimental significance for us. Jon was baptized there and spent many summers there as a child.
I had attended a women’s retreat with my church there for six years in a row, and I met my best friend, Julia, there during our freshman year of college (more on her later). When I met Jon at Winema, he invited me to hike with him to a bluff that overlooks the camp and the ocean. The bluff features some stunning views and three crosses, and it’s a place I’ve spent so much time praying and reflecting. We hiked to the top, then sat down on a bench to catch our breath and talk. I then noticed that there was something under the middle cross. When I asked Jon about it, he said he didn’t know what it was and that maybe someone had set up a prayer station for the camp or something. I then went over to investigate and found a blanket, some pillows, candles, flowers, and a Bible at the foot of the cross. I picked up the Bible and saw that 1 Corinthians 13 (the “love chapter”) was highlighted. I looked at Jon, and he smiled at me, saying that I should turn to where the bookmark was in the Bible.
I turned there and saw that Song of Solomon 3:4 was highlighted: “When I found the one I love. I held him and would not let go.” At the top of the page, Jon had written “Marry Me?” and he had wrapped the ring around the bookmark. I immediately began to cry and smile like crazy. Jon took the Bible, took the ring off the bookmark, and got down on one knee! He said a whole bunch of sweet things (that I don’t really remember because I was crying/laughing so hard) and asked me to marry him. I thankfully remembered to say yes, kissed him, and hugged him tighter than I ever had before! It was the happiest, most joyful moment of my life!
Remember that I mentioned I met my best friend, Julia, at Winema? Well, she is a freelance photographer, and she and Jon had schemed the proposal together. After Jon put the ring on my finger, I then heard her come running out of the bushes, where she was hiding and taking pictures of the whole proposal! We both screamed and I hugged her, too. She then took some more amazing photos of us – I think she captured the joy of the day perfectly. I could not have asked for a more perfect proposal! Jon knows my heart so well, and I thank God daily that I get to love such a kind, gentle, Christ-seeking man for the rest of my life. I truly will never forget this day, and I can’t wait to marry the love of my life!
