How We Met
It was the first semester my second year at the University of South Carolina. I had transferred there from a college in New Jersey close to where I grew up. I was finally getting adjusted to my new life down there and making lots of friends. Landon had also recently moved to Columbia South Carolina from Charleston. One of his closest friends, Anthony suggested they move to Columbia because it would be a fresh start. Landon and I were introduced to each other for the first time through a mutual friend of ours who we met our first year in Columbia. My first impression of him was “wow, he is really handsome”! After talking for a little while we learned that we both grew up in New Jersey. Small world! We didn’t really hangout often in the beginning. He knew me as “Kate’s friend” and I looked him as just one of her neighbors. One night sometime in the spring Kate mentioned there was going to be a party at her neighbor’s apartment. We decided to go and check it out. I wasn’t really all that excited because I had been to a few of their parties before and didn’t think they were that fun.
Shortly after we got there I came to realize that he and I had some sort of connection. It was this connection were we didn’t have to say anything. It was the way we both looked at each other. That was the first moment I realized I was looking at him differently, not just a friend but someone I was interested in. There was a girl at the party and she seemed pretty into him. I was outside on the porch with some friends and he came outside and stood next to me. He whispered to me “I just want to let you know I am not interested in anyone else and nothing is going on with the girl inside the party.” I thought to myself, I wonder why he is telling me that. But at the same time I was happy about it. After he told me that, we were by each other’s side for the rest of the night. We just talked and spent time getting to know each other. We were so different from one other but yet we just clicked.
Towards the end of the night he drove me around to the exit of the apartment community to say goodbye. It started to rain heavily outside. We hugged each other goodbye as it poured and he gave me the sweetest kiss. As I was driving home I thought to myself this guy could become someone very special in my life-there was definitely “a spark”. As I was getting into bed I got a text message from him. The text message said “I would love to take you on a proper date”. My face light up. I immediately replied yes! What a gentlemen I thought! That week we got together for our date. He took me out to a lovely dinner at Cowboy Brazilian Steakhouse and we ordered three different desserts. (I love dessert!) Because our first date went so well we keep going on more dates and were spending most of our time together. Shortly after he asked me to be his girlfriend and that’s how it all began! Almost five years later, I still look at him the same way I did that night at the party.
how they asked
It was Thursday evening May 19th and I was finishing up work for the day. Landon text messaged me and said “you should leave work a few minutes early and hurry home”. I thought to myself why should I hurry home? I ended up leaving work early and once I walked in the door I saw a note on the kitchen counter. The note said “Pack your bags, we are going on trip that you will always remember. Get dressed up because we are going for dinner once we arrive”. I immediately was freaking out because it was not typical of him to put together a getaway trip. I quickly packed my bags and got ready. Once he picked me up from our apartment he said “We are going to Newport Road Island”! I was so excited because we went there the year before and I fell in love with it. Once we got there we went for an intimate dinner at Bouchard and checked into our hotel. I was so impressed! I was really looking forward to seeing what he had planned for the rest of the weekend since my birthday was coming up in a few days. The next day we enjoyed our time together sitting outside by the bonfire followed by lunch.
A few hours later, Landon said he wanted to drive to Castle Hill Inn because they have an amazing picturesque lighthouse a few steps off of the property. I of course said, “Sure, let’s go”! As we were driving to the lighthouse I knew something was up because he was acting a bit nervous. Once we got to Castle Hill Inn we parked the car and he held my hand. We walked together hand in hand to the lighthouse. We were on the steps looking out into the ocean and enjoying the sunset together when he told me to turn around. Before he got down on one knee, he said a speech that he came up with on the spot.
Something that he said felt very in the moment. He told me how much he loved me and how he couldn’t imagine spending his life with anyone else. He talked about all of the memories we have together and about how he can’t wait to make more. Then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I immediately said “yes!!” And we kissed. I couldn’t be happier!
This was the most special moment, one I will never forget. A photographer he hired appeared out from where he was hiding to “capture the moment”. I was so surprised! He introduced himself to me and said that Landon had put all of this together because he knew we would want to look back at this very moment in years to come. We explored the beach and the cliffs with our photographer taking pictures along the way.
To top off the most magical night of my life we had the most romantic dinner followed by of course my favorite, chocolate soufflé. May 20, 2016 will be a day I never forget. I can’t wait for June 16, 2017, the day I will marry the man of my dreams and get to call him my husband!
