Lacy and John

A weekend away to Cincinnati to watch the Los Angeles Dodgers and celebrate our 2 year anniversary was the weekend away that John and I had been looking forward to for weeks. John is a big Dodgers fan and I enjoy watching baseball. I arranged for us to have tickets to the Reds/Dodgers game for Saturday, June 17th. John reserved a room at the Marriott on the river and I found a new brewery located just down the street from our hotel. We made our first stop at Braxton Brewing Company in Covington, KY. We sampled different beers, had lunch, and then checked into our hotel. After we got to our room John had to go down back downstairs because he said something was wrong with the room rate. (He did this to scope out a place to propose I later learned) He came back upstairs and said everything was fixed; we proceeded onto the game. It was an incredibly hot summer day in Cincinnati so after the game we came back to the hotel to shower and get ready for dinner. Before we went to dinner John wanted to go downstairs to have drinks and exchange our gifts; I had a card, we had agreed to not buy each others gifts; John had a long, large box. We get our drinks at the hotel bar and proceed to go outside and sit on the patio overlooking the river and Cincinnati skyline. I gave John my card and then he slides the box in front of me. I open the box to find a beautiful tiled sign that said Shumway. I look up from the box very confused & I find John down on one knee to my left with a ring in his hand. I only remember John saying “I don’t have much to give, but I have my last name (Shumway) if you will accept it; Will you marry me?” I was crying, he was crying and I said yes. The sign was made in New Orleans, one of our favorite cities. It was made with the same tiles that spell our the street names in the French Quarter. John reached out to someone we met in New Orleans to help him make the sign. We left Louisville as boyfriend & girlfriend and came back engaged!
