How We Met
Paul and I actually ended up the meeting by chance at the University of New Haven back in the Fall of 2008 at a fraternity party. After that night, Paul instantly became my best guy friend! Paul actually wanted to be more than friends. I cherished my friendship with him so much, and I was too scared to risk losing him completely if things didn’t work out! Little did I know he was exactly what I have been searching for my entire life! Sometimes the best things in life take time, we just happened to take 4 years at UNH for it to happen, and we are forever grateful it did!
Our love story started over 8.5 years ago when two best friends decided to take a chance on each other! He is such a significant part of my life because he’s been in my world since day one. He is the other half of my soul, my truest best friend, the ying to my yang, and he has had my heart from the start! I knew from day one that he was my soulmate, even when I didn’t believe him when he told me when he saw me across the room at that frat party freshmen year that he told his friends “I’m going to marry that girl one day!”❣️ The rest, as they say, is history.
We have dated long-distance a majority of our 8.5 years of being together! If you love someone enough, the distance will never stop you. You will always find a way to make it work! Even though being apart has never been easy, virtual date nights have been our kind of thing – and he is still the best view from 300 miles away! After conquering long-distance dating and social and physical distancing from this quarantine, we will FINALLY be moving into our first place together! So whenever the world decides to open back up, we will start renovations on our first home & will be starting the next chapter of our lives as The Future Mr. and Mrs. Minelli❤️❤️
How They Asked
In the midst of a global pandemic, Paul managed to find a way to create one of the most romantic and magical moments of my life💍 On Saturday, March 21st, 2020, Paul decided to change my life forever by asking me to marry him. It still gives me chills to think about it! I entered quarantine with a boyfriend of 8.5 years and came out with a fiancé!
Paul, my parents, and I were in quarantine for 2 weeks after my mom who is an RN came in contact with three patients on her unit who tested positive for COVID-19 – it was the scariest experience ever!! Once getting out of the 2-week quarantine, I drove down from Massachusetts to his house in Staten Island, NY to celebrate his 30th birthday and the closing of our first home together. And because we truly had no idea when we would see each other again after this since the world was going into lockdown!
When we were having breakfast that morning, Paul told me that we were going to our condo at noon to meet a guy who was coming over to show us sample tiles and shower doors for our new bathroom! I was so excited because this was going to be the first thing we were actually going to do together for our new home! I remember saying to him, “I did not bring anything nice to wear, and he was like, wear the nicest outfit you have, but you always look good no matter what.”
By the way, I had no idea that the reason why his mom and sister left that morning was to set up the condo for the proposal with all of their Valentine’s Day decorations! They told us that they were going to Gab’s boyfriend’s house to fix a hole in the wall before his mother noticed it! Before we left to go to the condo, Paul’s sister and mom came home and he asked Gab to come with us to the apartment, so she could give us her opinion on the bathroom tiles and shower doors!
When we got to the condo, Paul asked me to unlock the door, which I thought was strange, but I figured he needed my help because his hands were filled with Lysol wipes and hand sanitizer (thank you COVID-19) and when I opened the door and walked in, I noticed it said, “WILL YOU MARRY ME💍? on our living room wall!! I turned around and he was down on one knee with a smile that lit up the entire room! My reaction was priceless, my eyes swelled, my heart melted, and he left me completely speechless!
While I was in complete shock, I didn’t realize I didn’t say anything, and he said, “Are you going to say yes?” and I said, “Yes, yes, yes, a million times yes!” I was overcome with emotion and just couldn’t even believe it was finally happening, the moment I have always dreamt about. This was the most beautiful moment. In the most special place. And the biggest shock of my life! Those words on the wall will forever be in the foundation of our first home together. This is where our love story begins❣️
In a time of such uncertainty, Paul told me that he was certain he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me and that he wanted me to be his quarantine partner for life! Our engagement was not how we thought it would be due to being in quarantine, but it was unbelievably perfect!
Paul asked me to marry him on the exact day he planned on proposing, but it was not his original plan. He planned on proposing to me at his huge 30th birthday party in NYC that night but it was canceled because the city that never sleeps was shut down. His parents rented out an entire bar in Manhattan for his party which they planned for months! My parents, my brother and his girlfriend were actually coming down for the weekend all the way from Massachusetts to celebrate with everyone! And his whole family was going to be there! He told me that his plan was to propose to me in front of all our friends and family, which I said I always wanted! He said, “I knew we both would be looking great all dressed up, and of course your nails would have been done which I knew was a must, and I was going to have people in different parts of the room recording it all!” Paul said to me, “Do you know why I wanted you to stand up next to me while I gave my thank you speech to everyone at my birthday party? Well, it was because after I was done with my speech, the DJ was going to put our song on (Wonderwall by Oasis) and I was going to ask you to marry me!”
I remember him asking me weeks before the party to stand up there with him during his speech, and I thought it was funny because it was so unlike him. He has never been scared to stand up in front of anyone, let alone his family! The thought of him proposing to me at his birthday party only crossed my mind once. I joked with my mom saying, “What if Paul proposes to me at his birthday party!” And she said, “The world doesn’t always have to revolve around you Kyrsten, it will happen when it’s meant to happen!” But now that I look back on it, he was dropping hints all over the place and I was totally oblivious. He had his sister ask me about my nails, he kept telling me he loved my outfit I picked out for the party, he made several comments saying are you sure you want to dye your hair right before my party we are going to take a ton of pictures what if you end up not liking it… and HE HATES TAKING PICTURES! He literally thought of everything! And to think his Plan B came into place the night before the actual proposal & it was absolutely breathtaking!
Although this was not the elaborate proposal surrounded by our family and friends that he planned for months, it’s OUR story, it was PERFECT, and I wouldn’t change it for the world! During all this craziness, it has shown us that our love will never be postponed or canceled and even in the darkest of days our love is forever! Paul and I haven’t seen each other since getting in engaged over a month and a half ago – this is the longest we have gone without seeing each other and we are not sure when we will be reunited! Being separated during the quarantine has been so hard, but this proposal was the most unbelievable surprise and something positive to celebrate during such a terrifying time. The world stopped when he asked me to spend forever with him and we cannot wait for our forever together💍❤️
