How We Met

Mark and I met in college in an introduction to philosophy class. We had been in class for 3 weeks and one day he just reached out his hand to shake mine and said: “Hey, I’m Mark”. Apparently, he had been looking for “the cutest girl in the class” to sit next to (even though I wore my hair in a bun and gym clothes every day I guess he chose me). I almost thought it was weird because it was so random, but his confidence really struck me. He was dressed in sweatpants, a sweatshirt, and flip flops and couldn’t care less being a college wrestler. We became friends after that, keeping each other busy in class because being an accounting and business major, we didn’t have very much of an interest in our general education philosophy class (no offense Professor Bates, you were awesome). He started making me little origami stars in class, then we started going to chapel together, then to lunch together, then out with friends on the weekends and so on. We were friends for 9 months before he finally decided to ask me to be his girlfriend. Slow and steady definitely wins the race in my book. Fast forward 5 years and here we are in Los Angeles living the life we dreamed of in college, but together, stronger and more in love than ever.

how they asked

Mark and I planned on going to brunch and wine tasting with our friends one Saturday in Malibu. I had an odd excitement about it all week, but I chocked it up to be because we don’t see our childhood friends too often because of work. I never could’ve guessed what Mark had planned for that weekend. On Saturday morning, I was running late to brunch (of course) and Mark kept telling me we needed to go because our reservation for brunch was at 10 A.M.

I always figured he would be so nervous the day he proposed, but he was so calm and collected I suspected nothing. Since we were running late, he called the restaurant on our way there and changed the reservation to be half an hour later. Right after he hung up he told me he wanted to show me a cool spot he found off PCH. Still, I didn’t think anything was out of the ordinary because he finds cool places all over LA a lot of the time.

We pulled up to the Lake Shrine Self Realization Center and started walking around. It was one of the most beautiful places I had ever seen. Of course, at that point, I started suspecting something was up and my heart definitely started to pick up a beat, or two. We walked up to a bridge on the lake and the most beautiful bouquet of red roses was lying on it.

He handed them to me, got down on one knee, and told me the most beautiful words anyone has told me. Since I was ugly crying like a weirdo I heard half of them and had to ask him later what all he said (haha). I also had to ask him if I even said yes to the notorious question to be his wife in the midst of my ugly cry. Of course, I did. It was such a magical blur that I’ll never forget. I love you, Mark Jorgensen!
