How We Met

Tyler and I met as interns at a publishing company during my senior year of college at the University of Oklahoma. The day we met, the publishing company had taken us all on an outing to a local bookstore in OKC. I remember thinking he was the most handsome, well-dressed guy I’d ever seen, which is ironic because he used to wear cargo shorts when we first started dating (he has since realized how hideous they are). I called my mom after I left and told her all about the gorgeous, tan intern guy to which she replied, “I think he’s the one!” Obviously I thought she was crazy considering we’d barely spoken five words to each other and I had a serious boyfriend at the time.

Needless to say, my mom was right. I broke up with my boyfriend a few weeks later after finding out he cheated, and continued to admire Tyler from afar. I couldn’t help but think “the one” was right in front of me all along. We went on our first date later that summer after he “liked” a bunch of my Facebook pictures and eventually asked for my number. We haven’t stopped talking since!

how they asked

July 25, 2015 was the third anniversary of our first date. We had a wedding to go to that afternoon for one of my coworkers so we were both already dressed up. A little over an hour before the wedding was supposed to start, Tyler asked if we could leave early because he had a surprise for me. I knew what was about to happen, but I had no idea where he was taking me! We pulled into the parking lot at his family’s church in Yukon and he said we were going to do a couple’s photo-shoot. We walked over to a little picnic area behind the church where the photographer was waiting for us. She started out taking some pictures of us on a bench and my lips wouldn’t stop shaking because I was so excited! After that she led us over to a picnic blanket and Tyler pulled out a book that he’d written about our relationship, aptly titled “More than People”. (One time when he had a little too much to drink he told me he loved me “more than people”, and we’ve never stopped saying that since). Being that it was July in Oklahoma, it was disgustingly hot outside so he just read a page or two and then skipped to the final chapter (marriage, of course!), and got down on one knee. It still seems like a dream!

We had some snacks in the shade and I finished reading his book, which was the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen. It was extra cute given that we met each other through our publishing internship. Writing is ultimately what brought us together!

After my coworker’s wedding, we headed over to Tommy’s Italian American Grill to celebrate. Tyler had put together an engagement party and tons of our friends and family were waiting for us! The biggest surprise of the night was when my friend Amanda dragged me over to a booth in the corner where she said a special guest was waiting for me. I started crying immediately when I saw it was my friend Derrick who had flown in all the way from Chicago to be there!

It was a whirlwind day, but it was more than I could have ever hoped for! We’re getting married 10/22/16.
