How We Met
Kyle and I met back in 2014 while attending the Disney College Program Internship at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL. We both worked food and beverage at Disney’s Art of Animation resort and immediately became friends and got along very well. Throughout our time there, I secretly began to like him as more than a friend but never let him know because he was interested in another girl at the time. So I put the thought aside and decided that it just wasn’t meant to be. Something drew me to Kyle thought that I couldn’t ignore. He always knows how to make people laugh and has such a bright personality and brings me out of my shell and makes me more outgoing. He is always there for me no matter what. I couldn’t have asked for a better friend. Although it was tough saying goodbye after the 6-month internship ended, we knew we wanted to remain friends despite the distance: he is from NJ and I am from NC. So we knew it would be a while before we saw each other again.
Fast forward to the summer of 2016: Kyle was in the middle of going through a bad breakup. We started talking again and I just allowed myself to be there for him in case he needed to vent about what was happening and just be a great friend for support. I was there for him as much as I could be. Kyle knew I was living in Florida again attending my second Disney College Program and had mentioned how he missed being at Disney and wanted to come, visit me. I was so ecstatic and started planning the trip right away. I thought to myself, “wow, this is it”: I could finally tell Kyle how I have felt about him all this time. I did not know if he felt the same way but at least he deserved to know my true feelings.
Kyle came to visit for a week in January 2017 and we celebrated his birthday as well while attending all of the Disney parks and even going to Universal for one day. We had an absolute blast with one another and could tell there was a spark there between us. Kyle found out before the trip somehow about my feelings and ended up taking me on a date to a nice dinner. Towards the end of the trip after a long day in the parks, we sat in my car in the parking lot at one of the theme parks and talked for an hour about the pros and cons of whether we should date or not. One of our biggest cons was long distance because we both have been through that before and it did not end well for either of us. We decided to give it a chance and take things one day at a time….and the rest is history!!!
How They Asked
I officially resided in Florida at the beginning of 2017 and bought a condo as a starter place, while Kyle stayed in NJ because he had a lot of job opportunities there. During the summer of 2018, about a year and a half of Kyle and I dating, he mentioned how his mother has always wanted to visit Florida and go to Disney again after having not been there since she was a little kid. Kyle has family (a sister-in-law and niece) who live in Ocala, about an hour from the Orlando area where I was living, and talked about how his mother could come down and stay with their family here, and that I should go to one of the parks with them during that week and have a “girls day”. I thought nothing of it and agreed to talk about how much fun it would be. Little did I know that Kyle had a plan up his sleeve. About a week before his mother was supposed to arrive, he texted me and told me he felt bad that he couldn’t come along with his mother next week, as it was going to be our 2-year anniversary so he suggested I go get my nails done and he would pay for it. Unbeknownst to me, I already had my nails done 2 weeks prior for my brother’s wedding so again, I didn’t think anything of this. I told him it was very sweet of him to offer that and got them done a few days later.
The morning finally came for our girls day at Magic Kingdom park. I could not be more excited. His mother stayed at my condo the night before and offered to style my hair that morning, which I couldn’t say no to! I felt pampered already. The sister-in-law and niece met up with us at the condo and I drove all of us to the theme park. We had a wonderful day riding rides, eating fabulous food and enjoying spending quality time together. We were scheduled to eat dinner that night at Be Our Guest Restaurant, which had a pre-fixe three course menu, I was really looking forward to it because I had not been to the restaurant since the menu change and it was one of my favorites on property, as I am such a big Beauty and the Beast fan.
About 45-minutes before our reservation, Kyle’s mother suggested we start heading to the restaurant a little bit early so we could check out the three dining rooms and see which one we might get. I thought that was a little weird but I didn’t question it. As we started walking towards where the entrance to the restaurant is, we saw a huge crowd gathered around the corner just in front of Gaston’s Fountain just in front of the Gaston’s Tavern food place. That particular spot is usually where the famous Disney character Gaston from Beauty and the Beast comes out for meet-and-greets, so I told everyone that is probably why there was such a crowd. As we got closer to the fountain, I noticed there was a Disney Photopass photographer with a huge “Happy Birthday’ button prop moving towards us. He approached me and asked if we wanted a picture in front of the fountain. I turned around and asked my group if they all wanted a picture. All of a sudden the photographer shook his head and pointed his finger at me saying “No, just you.” All I could think of was…”it’s definitely not my birthday, so why is he asking me?” But I decided to go along with it.
The photographer placed me in front center of the fountain and asked me to pose with one of my hands on my hip. I did as he suggested and had the biggest smile on my face. I had no idea what was going on. Then, the photographer looked confused and said “Wait a minute, there’s somebody behind you…”. As soon as I turned around, there was Kyle, right behind me, with the biggest goofy-looking grin on his face!! I was so overwhelmed and taken aback with what was happening that I couldn’t speak. I just had both of my hands over my mouth and must have blinked about 1000 times. Kyle then took his hands and placed them in mine, then began the most beautiful speech. Before I knew it, he was down on one knee in front of me and opened the box to the most beautiful ring, one of which he picked out from a group of 5 rings I had discovered while ring shopping last year. I couldn’t believe it, the love of my life just proposed to me and I was delighted!! Kyle told me he had one more surprise for me and turned me around, where I saw my parents walking towards me!!! I had no idea they were there either!! Kyle told me he had been planning this for about a year and I definitely saw how much time and effort went into it, filled with so much love. It was easily hands-down the best day of my life!!
