How We Met
Kyle and I met our Senior year of college at the one (and only) bar in town. I had just turned 21 the week before and was out with my roommates for Thirsty Thursday. It was a warm night and there were about 20-25 people outside on the front patio area. I looked across the patio and saw my friend Dan standing next to this guy that I thought was super cute. I brazenly texted Dan asking him who his friend was, and then put my phone away and starting chatting again with my roommates. Not 3 minutes later do I hear Dan literally SCREAM across the bar, “Hey Cait, you mean THIS guy” as he points to Kyle and laughs. At this point I am turning about 50 shades of red and so I quickly made a beeline back inside the bar – no way, never going back outside again. Well a little pep talk from my friends and some liquid courage later, I headed back outside determined to introduce myself. Feeling my newfound confidence I walked right up to Kyle and declared that since my birthday was last week that he should buy me drink. THANK GOD he didn’t think I was an absolute lunatic and we went inside to get that drink. Hours of talking later, we exchanged numbers and the rest is history! We’ve been inseparable ever since!
how they asked
Around the time we got engaged, Kyle and I had been together for 3 years, living together for 2 years, and we knew we were going to get married. I’m a bit of a Type-A personality, so patience is not a virtue of mine, and as much as I love to be surprised, I also love to know things. Kyle really had his work cut out for him if he was going to try and “surprise” me with a proposal. It was a chilly December night, and I had just driven back from visiting a friend in Charleston, SC. I was tired, hungry, and had just taken a shower when Kyle came home from work. I’d met up with him earlier for lunch, and he’d been acting weird, but I shrugged it off assuming he was hangry. When he walked through the door of our apartment he kind of just stopped and stared at me (cue visual of the girl from The Ring, wet hair and all, believe me – I was a VISION). I distinctly remember the he said, “I brought you something home tonight and I think you are really gunna like it”. “HALLELUJAH YOU BOUGHT PIZZA FOR DINNER” – were my exact thoughts as he started walking towards me.
With pepperoni and cheese on the brain, I had no idea how to comprehend what happened next! I watched as Kyle got down on one knee, looked up at me, and took out a box from his jacket pocket. I was stunned, I couldn’t believe it was real, everything I had been (not so patiently) waiting for was finally happening. He told me that although I had a “Pinterest perfect” vision of getting engaged somewhere with our friends hiding and my nails/hair/makeup done, that he couldn’t love me any more than when I am just at home wearing sweatpants and no “frills”. He asked if I would marry him, and I obviously said “YES” (probably a little too loudly, sorry neighbors). Later on, as we were coming down from Cloud 9, Kyle asked if I knew what was coming when he said he brought me something. I smiled and told him, “No I thought you bought me a pizza”. Needless to say, it’s been the best surprise to date!
