How We Met
I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate my 28th birthday on June 21, 2014. My college best friend/sorority sister Ashlee was getting married in a few months & decided on a destination bachelorette party in Nashville, TN. After a long night of bar hopping we decided to make one last stop at the world famous Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. We arrived to a jam packed bar and after about 15 min of singing & dancing to live country music, finally found a large enough table to fit the 10 of us. A few minutes later I noticed a guy standing with his back to the bar staring in my direction. I nudged my friend Sam and asked “Is it just me, or does that guy keep staring at me?!” Being the only single girl out of our party, she recommended we go up and grab a drink (right by this guy) for the bride to be. As we approached the bar, a girl ran up and started talking to this mystery guy, and thinking it was his gf, we got the drink and went back to our table. He was completely ignoring this girl, who ended up walking away, and we continued to awkwardly catch each other’s eyes multiple times. I turned to my friend again and said “Yeah, that guy is definitely still staring!” She noticed and said she was going to get him, and before I could say “NO!” she bolted in his direction. Little did I know then that she was requesting he “buy her a drink so she could do him a favor”. After introducing ourselves, TJ told me the friend he was supposed to fly in with missed his flight. He had just landed in Nashville a few hours ago and decided to grab a beer at his favorite bar alone, and the rest of the bachelor party would be arriving the following morning. After talking a few more minutes we realized that we only lived about an hour away from each other – me being from Detroit, MI and him from Toledo, OH. We exchanged numbers & met up again the next night. Three days later we were on our first date in Michigan, and a year and 5 months later he asked me to be his wife! Our lives were forever changed by a unexpected encounter in a different state, in a random bar, on my 28th birthday. I don’t know if that makes me believe in coincidence, or fate, or sheer blind luck, but it definitely makes me believe in something!
how they asked
TJ has a passion for hunting and everything outdoor. He spent a few weekends end of October, early November 2015 hunting down in southern Ohio. Since we live an hour away from each other, the weekends are our time together and I was really, really missing him. He promised me a “Date night in Detroit” the following weekend, just the two of us. Detroit has such a special meaning to us because 17 months prior, we randomly met in Nashville, and him being from Toledo, OH and me from Michigan, we’d meet halfway in Detroit for date nights almost every week. We’d try out new restaurants and bars…it’s where we fell in love with the city, and each other.
I got off work a little later than expected, and didn’t know there were multiple events along with the tree lighting causing a major backup. I arrived late, gave him a kiss and we walked hand in hand to the Campus Martius – but as we were walking there heard the countdown and saw the tree light up from a distance. We were trying to fight our way through the thousands of people and I somehow lost him for a few minutes. When I looked up, we caught eyes and smiled & he walked back over to me. He told me he loved me, has never been happier and got down on one knee. He had hired an amazing photographer to capture the moment which was hands down the absolute best day and biggest surprise of my life. After the proposal he had set up a surprise dinner, with both of our immediate families, and a surprise gathering with a group of my closest friends to celebrate! 3 surprises in one night!! My heart has never been so happy! In April, we plan to go back to Nashville, the place it all began and in November I will be able to call this amazing man my husband!
