Kristen and Philip
How We Met – kristen’s version
We actually met through a mutual friend. I went to college with Shelby, she was in the same sorority as me. We lived together in college, and are also currently living together in Atlanta. Philip and Shelby are best friends from high school! Shelby and I’s other best friend was getting married the March after we graduated college, and she informed me that I really needed to take her best guy friend to the wedding. At first I was like, “No, I think I will just go by myself..” and she said, “No, you’re going to invite Philip, and I will set it all up!” So Philip and I casually texted back and forth for a little while. I decided to go to Shelby’s friends lake house for New Years, and Shelby informed me that Philip would be there… So of course I went into complete panic mode.
Haha! I ended up meeting Philip at the party, and we really hit it off that night! After that, we continued to talk back and forth as I will still living in Memphis at the time. I came to Atlanta a few times to visit Shelby and would end up getting to see Philip as well! Philip and I eventually went on our first official date, and he ended up flying to Memphis two weeks later to go to the wedding with me. We had a blast, and later decided we wanted to give this relationship thing a shot… even living in different cities, and well, the rest is history!! The Lord has truly blessed our relationship beyond measure! We are so excited to start this next chapter in our lives! Eek!!
how they asked – Philip’s version
I have known for a while that Kristen was the woman that I was going to marry. With me being in medical school, we don’t get as much time as we once did to do special things together, so I knew that I wanted to make my proposal really special and meaningful. I searched all over Atlanta for different locations, and happened to stumble across this overlook. Naturally the view was breathtaking, and I knew it was somewhere that Kristen would love.
Kristen mentioned that we lived in different cities when we met.. As we dated long distance in the start of our relationship, Kristen always wrote me letters, and they always meant so much to me! We both lived in Atlanta for two years, but when I started Medical school and had to move to Macon, the letters started back up again, and were always a huge help during stressful weeks. I appreciated them so much, and I wanted to show her that.
So I had a special leather pouch made, and I had all of the letters that she wrote me put into the pouch along with a letter of my own to her that just told her how much she meant to me.
Fast forward to the day of the proposal, I had Kristen under the impression that we were just going to meet friends at a house to eat dinner. When we pulled up to the overlook, I walked her to an area that I had set up with some flowers and a picture of us to give her the letters.
I think Kristen realized about halfway through the letter what was going on, I could see it on her face.. she was so excited, shocked, and fighting back tears.
After she read the letters, I took a few minutes to talk about the area and how my dads grandparents at one point lived two houses down from this place, and how I saw nothing but her in my future.
Kristen and I never really had “our” meal or “our” movie etc… but this place will definitely always be “our” place. I had worked with her best friend to organize a surprise engagement party afterwards. We had a ton of friends and family come in from all over the south-east. When we walked into our friends house they all surprised Kristen. I think the whole night of drinks and fellowship with all of those close to our relationship meant so much to the both of us!
