How We Met
I had bought my sister Kelsey tickets to the Jason Aldean/ Kelly Clarkson concert at Wrigley Field for July 20th, 2013 for a Christmas 2012 gift. The day of the concert we were running late, per usual, and decided to snag a seat that was closer to the field for a better view. We got kicked out of our seat as they were not our assigned seats. We kept moving up, and over, and up, about five times until finally we found a seat that didn’t belong to anyone. (Still not our assigned seats.) After Thomas Rhett’s last song, my sister Kelsey, engaged at the time, elbowed me in the ribs and told me to check out the hunk two seats down. (Who I later came to find out was also NOT in his assigned seat.) It just so happened that on his next beer run that hunk and I struck up a conversation. We danced and sang to every Kelly Clarkson and Jason Aldean song for the rest of the concert. He asked me to a bar afterwards where we continued our night of song and choreographed dance to Justin Timberlake’s ‘Mirrors.’ An epic moment that had all our friends wondering, “How long have they known each other?” A couple of days later he asked me on a first date, and almost two years to the day later on July 19th, 2015 for his hand in marriage.
how they asked
It was the weekend before our two year anniversary and we decided that we’d celebrate on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday we went to the fresh fish and farmers market and I cooked him a home made meal. I gave him his gift certificate to get a new golf driver and we had a few glasses of wine as we playfully danced to ‘Mirrors’ in our kitchen. Sunday morning he told me to be ready to go at 1pm. We got in the car and started heading South on 55 towards Midway airport. I had no idea where we were going! He passes the airport and pulls into the private airport. We’re met by our pilot who tells me we’re taking a private helicopter tour of the city! I WAS EXCTATIC! I’d never been on a helicopter before! We flew over our apartment building, gorgeous downtown and the river, and over Wrigley Field where we met. He leaned over as we flew past Wrigley and kissed me and told me he loved me.
After the helicopter ride I called my mom to tell her the amazing gift Matt had gotten me for our anniversary. She said how happy she was for me and told me about how her and my father were outside doing yard work all day. (They live in Cleveland, OH.) We then went back home to get ready for dinner. Matt told me to be ready at 6:00. We went downstairs and outside the front of our apartment building was an Uber black car, nice touch! We got in and headed towards Michigan Ave. I learned as we pulled up that we were doing dinner at Spiaggia. I had been dying to go there. Our 14 course, 7 wine pairing dinner was absolutely exquisite.
Matt asked if I’d like to go for a walk after dinner, which I of course replied yes! We often take walks after a nice meal and talk about our favorite part. As we’re walking North on Michigan Ave towards Oak Street Beach I see a guitarist about 20ft ahead of me. My first thought was, oh, that guy is dressed pretty nice to be a street performer… where is his guitar case out for tips… OH MY GOSH HE’S PLAYING OUR SONG (‘Mirrors’- Justin Timberlake). Then I knew- this was it! I stood in a bit of shock, turned towards Matt and asked him to dance. I dropped my purse on the sidewalk and we danced for almost the entire song, which seemed to have lasted about 10 hours! Towards the end of the song, Matt told me some of the most beautiful things I have ever heard, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. My reply was, “I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you. YES.”
Camera flashes were going off as a bit of a crowd had gathered. A woman walks up to me and introduces herself as Jenee, the proposal planner. She helped execute on Matt’s proposal idea. Another woman introduces herself, Molly-the photographer, and tells me that she got the whole thing on camera. We take some posed pictures with Michigan Avenue and the Drake Hotel in the background and get in a cab to head home. I feel in shock as we’re heading towards our apartment. I’m still shaking and I can hardly believe what just happened. I start listing the people we have to call when we get home. Matt suggests we Skype with our family. We live on the 6th floor of our apartment building, but when we got home, Matt pressed the 9th floor, the rooftop of our building. I walked into our party room upstairs to see my entire family from Ohio, his entire family from Iowa, and 10 of our closest friends. I lost it all over again. We celebrated the night away. It was and most likely and will forever be, other than our wedding day, the best day of my life.
