How We Met
Jonathan and I met in Law School. It was my first year and his second. He came into my class to do a presentation and I instantly noticed him. His intelligence is what caught my eye the most. A few days later we ran into each other during a school competition. He introduced himself and we locked eyes for what felt like minutes. Although I was giddy inside, I played it cool. We remained friends over the next two years and often saw each other, as we had mutual friends. Then, his birthday came around and he was having a celebration at a Karaoke Bar. My friends were invited but I was not. They somehow convinced me to come along and crash his party, something I would normally never do! That night (with a bit of liquid courage) he ended up telling me he’d always had a crush on me. I admitted I had a crush on him too. Our whirlwind of a romance finally began…
how they asked
It was the eve of my 33rd birthday. I planned a Sunday birthday brunch with a few of my closest girlfriends but the day was off to a rough start. My dad had just had surgery and was not doing well. I wanted to be by side so I was preparing to cancel my brunch. After talking with my mom and Jonathan I decided instead to head straight to his house after the brunch, as my friends were coming from long distances to see celebrate with me.
I had a reservation for 1:30 p.m. at my favorite brunch spot. I arrived about 15 minutes early, prepared to get this brunch over with so I could go see my dad. Not so fast said the Universe. We ended up having to wait an hour and a half to be seated. The restaurant is fairly small and was jam-packed so we were literally squished in a corner waiting to be seated. My anxiety was flaring and Jonathan was doing his best to keep me calm and positive but in my head, all I was thinking was, ‘I should have just canceled this brunch’.
We finally sat down and ordered some drinks. At this point, I had decided I was just going to enjoy my birthday celebration regardless of the circumstances. I took a few deep breaths and chose to cherish the present moment. When our drinks finally arrived, Jonathan stood to purpose a toast. I didn’t think much of it as it is not out of character for him to do something like that. He started thanking my friends for coming out to celebrate with me. I then noticed he started to stumble his words a little bit. Now THAT was out of character for Jonathan. Anybody who knows Jonathan knows he is a very eloquent speaker and very few things make him nervous.
Next thing I know, I see him standing at the table pulling a ring from the pocket of his jacket and asking for my hand in marriage. I was in complete and utter shock. I had absolutely no idea he was about to do this. I looked around the room and the entire restaurant was screaming and cheering, all eyes on me. I looked at each of my girlfriends who were screaming and cheering, their eyes filled with tears. It literally felt like time had stopped. It was a moment I will never forget. I then looked at Jonathan and said yes, a thousand times yes, to my best friend and the man of my dreams.
Needless to say, the day took a turn for the best. The very best.
P.S. In the video you can see Jonathan mouthing, “Did I win the bet?” this is because we had a bet going that I would know when he was going to purpose. I lost that bet. Hands down.
